Default MP3 capable?

I've got one of the first new style S40s (reg Sep 2004), and as far as I know it wont play MP3s. Whenever I put a disk with mp3s in, in it just says 'disk error'. When I asked at the dealer about upgrading to an MP3 capable player i was told that mine should already play MP3s!

After a lot of gentle disagreeing I left feeling confused, have the new style S40s supported MP3s from day 1 or is it a feature that has been added to the later versions?

Any help would be great

the ability to play mp3 format on cd's has only been introduced by volvo on the 2007 models, pre this year we are stuck with only normal tracks, i.e. the normal amount of play time per song that will fit onto a cd, usually about 20 tracks or so. No such upgrade is known off, unless you can get the volvo dealer to install a new cd changer unit with combined fm receiver, retro wire up a ign, power and neg and also add an aux input, and then route the ariel wiring to the front of the car to the back of the new unit and then get the nice dealer to upload software to a pre 2007 car with the 2007 settings for audio.

As soon as someone tries it it will open the flood gates for everyone to do the same thing.
