Uneven Brake Pad Contact
You know that slight grinding noise you get when you brake after not having used the car for a while, due to a build up of dirt or rust on the discs? Well I've started getting it all the time. It's been like this for the past 30 miles. I'm not getting any squealing or squeaking though.
Looking at the discs and the rear right seems to have a different pad contact pattern on it than the others. Here's a pic: There are no significant grooves, those two lines are just very shiny! The pads were new in Dec 2012 and have done about 10,000 miles since. There's probably a straight forward explanation, just wondering if I need to be concerned? Cheers! |

Bit of excessively hard stuff poking it's head out of the pad compound
Dig it out before you get grooves unless you like grooves or it may be shallow or small and wear away

Uneven Brake pad contact.
You could be excused from thinking it is overdue for a new set of discs and pads.

The mark is probably caused by whatever is holding on that last shred of pad lining.
Now the weather's picking up, it's time to spend some quality time with your braking system.

I would put my money on seized slider bolts/torn boots. Take one bolt off at a time, clean and re-lube while carefully inspecting each rubber cover. Replace as necessary.

Thanks all, seems like it could be a few different things then. Here's a side pic if that helps at all (handbrake is on):

It doesn't really look like you've given the rear brakes enough of a workout. Take it up to 60mph and then apply some moderate force until about 20mph and then let go. Do that about 5 times over your next journey and then take another look afterwards.

If the pads are old then they will go hard and it will tend to score the disc like this. Otherwise there maybe something got trapped under the pad perhaps.
