Default Volvo V40 Oil Level Sensor

Hey everyone, I’m brand new on here so please be gentle!
I’m having an issue with the Oil Sensor in my V40, it’s a 63’ plate, recently after a service and oil change the sensor was showing that the oil level was low when it was fine. After the issue persisted I replaced the Sensor with a brand new one.
This has been showing that the oil level has been overfilled which has then prompted the engine light to appear stating ‘service required,’ after it went back into the garage again, it came out and within a day it’s showing that the oil level is low again.
I’m at my wits end, can anyone shed any light onto why this is still persisting even after the new Sensor?

Thanks for any help

after all this , and replacing a sensor which is 99.9% likely to be ok .
you need to drain the oil and filter housing .. put exactly 5 litres back in and get the oil level reset at a dealer .
I assume the garage forgot to reset the oil level gauge OR they did and you did not drive more than 20 miles before discovering the inaccurate reading . Assuming also that they put the correct quantity of oil in ! It is very accurate and has to be exactly 5 litres going in . Don't forget the oil MUST be the approved volvo specification 0w/20 if it is a 4 cylinder 2 litre ...

Thanks for this, it has been drained multiple times, and the exact quantity of oil has been put back in, I’ve done around 50 miles today and it’s still not showing as correct.
Any other suggestions?

The oil level gauge has not been reset after the oil change has it? It then takes what ever is in the sump to be the correct level ..
It is essential that whoever adds the oil knows exactly to the nearest 50 ml how much to put in . Tomorrows cars are here right now , these cars need specialised methods and the only specialist is a dealer with up to date bulletins, training and experience .

I will need to check if the oil level gauge has been reset, can any garage reset the oil level gauge or is it Volvo specific?
But if it takes whatever is in the sump to be correect why does mine fluctuate, it went from overfilled yesterday to empty today?
The quantity of oil put in is specific, I’m not concerned on that front.
Thanks again

The oil gauge is reset through VIDA , the volvo dealer diagnostic software .

If you have not had a volvo Dealer service for sometime you are probably running on outdated engine software , it all helps , the systems are being continuously updated to cure small issues which develope as time goes on ...

Why does it fluctuate ? give it a day or so and 20 miles plus after being reset and it should stabilise .

Are you saying you have to bring the car in to volvo and give them the 400€ they want for it?
No way to do it yourself?

I mean even VIDA says "approx. 5,9L", and "check oil level" in the procedure for my car (V40 CC 2014 D3, 5 Zylinder 2,0L).

Any advice, or any clue what the correct VIDA procedure you are mentioning is?

They should charge no more than 18 minutes labour for a VIDA hook-up .

Yes you go to communication / ECM / ADVANCED / Resetting engine oil level after service ...

Hi all,

My name is Sander, 33 and from the Netherlands.
Sorry to kick this topic up but I'm struggling with a seaming basic oil change...

I just replaced the oil on a 2 litre V40 d4 2014.
I have not measured exactly how many oil went in...

And how about residual oil in the engine? Not everything comes out of there when draining.

It should hold 5.2L according to the manual. Unknown if this is with or without filter.

Also, resetting the oil level sensor make everything that's in currently in there the maximum, so if it's too much it will be this way untill the next reset?

The oil level gauge is telling me 1 bar less of maximum after one day without driving and reset. I'm assuming the sensor is calibrated the last time and should indicate the same level as before the oil change.

Also, when I read the value of the level sensor it tells me there is now 33.55mm of oil. But I have no reference.

I hope someone can elevate my knownledge of digital oil gauges and I hope I don't have to drain all again.. costly mistake.

Also have a DICE and VIDA, as well as a Delphi 150.

as some oil stays in you should only put in exactly 5 litres .
Best to drain oil and filter again .. put filter back , and put just 5 litres of oil back in the engine .. THEN reset the oil level gauge in Vida .. It should be ok then after a 20 mile drive .. ( 50km? )
