Default V40 D2 economy

Hi,

I’m comparing two V40 Redesign D2 from 2017 and 2019.

The 2019 model seems to have 120g/km CO2 and the 2017 has 94g/km. both are listed to have the D2 engine and power, and I can’t see why the 2019 would have lesser economy.

I wondered if anyone could direct me to why the economy might be different as I’d prefer to buy the newer model.

Auto trader listings:
2019 with poorer economy- https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-det...02304146302372
2017 with better economy- https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-det...02310313500503

Thanks
Harry

i thought the D2 is a 1.6 engine?.. but both show 2L,, but 118bhp so for a 2L its not making too much bhp ?

As far as I'm aware all of the VEA diesel engines are 2 litres. The V40 D2 between 2016 and 2019 was fitted with the D4204T8 engine at Euro 6 emissions level. From 2019 it was fitted with the D4204T13 engine at Euro 6D-Temp. Both have identical power output and torque.

Quoted CO2 figures aren't a fuel economy indication, but an allocated emissions rating which may affect tax bands. For non RDE2 cars the rates are £185 per year between 91 and 100g/km or £255 between 111 and 130g/km.

Cars were tested to the earlier RDE (not RDE2) standard from September 2019. Prior to that a different test was used. RDE2 only applies from 2021 as far as I'm aware, so not applicable for either car.

Probably the 2019 car was tested under RDE, whilst the 2017 car was tested under the previous standard.

Do both cars have the same transmission? I would also expect to see different CO2 levels quoted between manual and auto gearbox variants.

Upto MY2015 it was with Ford/PSA 1.6D engine.

From MY2015 it was a detuned version of the 2.0 VEA which inevitably wasn't as efficient, but more refined and reliable. Also got 8-speed auto instead of the Ford Powershift.
