Windscreen Wiper Problem.
Hello All.
Wednesday evening I parked my 2003 V70 diesel up as usual, switched everything off, locked it and went indoors. Thursday morning came out, got in it, inserted the ignition key, turned it to position 1 and the windscreen wipers started to operate even thought they were turned off......and they won't stop no matter what I do, (except turn the ignition off completely). Operating the switch across the range with the ignition on and they function normally, i.e. intermittent, normal speed and rapid, but put the switch in the off position and they continue to wipe at a slightly slower speed than the normal position and with about one second delay between each wipe. The only way to stop them is to switch the ignition off when they are at the bottom of the screen and remove the fuse. Any ideas?.....Anyone?....Please! |

Bit of an up date though. I tried putting the fuse back in today, (in the over-optimistic hope it would have "cured" itself and behave!). as soon as the fuse made contact, (with the ignition key in the on position and the wiper switch off), the wipers swept twice then stopped pointing straight up. Moving the wiper switch to intermittent, normal or rapid did nothing, the wipers remained pointing to the heavens. The only way I could get them to move again was by taking the fuse out and putting it back in. They then swept down and I removed the fuse to keep them there.
I'll look at the relay as J liddy suggests, thank you for that, but I'm still open to further suggestions |

I've not had to look into it on a Volvo but from other cars there are some electrical contacts inside the wiper motor gearbox which are how the wipers know where to park and provide the power to complete the stroke if you turn them off hallway, what you have described makes me wonder if there is a breakage or short circuit in there.

As Davenp says there's something wrong within the memory switch so there will only be a couple of item's that have caused this to happen .a part may have to be replaced whichever one it is hopefully not expensive or hard to get at .a second hand one should do it as this problem doesn't seem common. A repair may be possible 1st option .wiper moter working are not that complicated .my 900 volvo has 300000 miles and I've owned it 27 year's same moters although the rear moter has sizesd up twice I have stripe it down and cleaned All the crap out and it's still OK

Well I went out this morning to have a look for/at the relay as J Iddy suggested and as soon as I put the fuse back in the wipers started behaving normally and have continued to do so for the passed couple of hours. Trouble now is that I don't trust them enough to believe the issue has cured itself and am now waiting for them to fail again. (is that being a bit pessimistic? ) I think I'll have to get the whole set-up checked over by a professional just for my own peace of mind.
