Fuel conundrum
I'm looking at a potential job change, and the new job comes with a fuel allowance for my personal vehicle(unlimited personal use, the job actually entails minimal driving for work related purposes) but the problem is that the allowance is a fixed dollar amount and can be tagged to just one vehicle. I tried to get the allowance halved and the base salary increased but was told that the allowance was a fixed amount and was a take it or leave it offer.
It's a generous allowance - works out at about 7000 litres p.a at current diesel pricing. I'd be lucky to use half that in a year so the challenge is how to maximise usage. The allowance is "tagged" to just the one vehicle via a fuel card. You can advise odo readings at the counter when you fuel up but this is optional so in theory if I gave no readings then no-one would monitor my mileage versus fuel usage. I've been mulling over ideas like filling and draining the XC60 and using the drained fuel for my wife's car (so filling the XC60 twice a week for example) Or maybe putting some portable fuel containers in the back and filling them up at the same time I fill up the XC60 (Both options are potentially messy, and not even sure if you can actually siphon fuel out of an XC60 tank easily, is there an anti siphon baffle down in the fuel filler pipe I wonder ??) My desire to maximise fuel allowance usage is motivated more by need than greed (3 kids, 2 cats and a potentially unemployed wife to support. The new job is a drop in base salary as moving to a smaller city (but higher quality of life)) Any suggestions / comments ?

Just a side thought I may be wrong someone will tell me but have you worked out the tax you will have to pay [ benefit in kind] or whatever the HMRC call it now on the amount of fuel you use on private mileage?

Very expensive ‘freebie’ - personally I would avoid it especially as you won’t be doing that many miles.

I used to work alongside a chap who had a habit of syphoning off a few gallons of diesel from his works van on a daily basis for running his old Land Rover, the excess stored in containers for future use. Unfortunately for him he was spotted syphoning his tank one day by a passing unmarked police car who then proceeded to follow him and when they discovered around 500 gallons of diesel stored at his house they spoke to his employers. He lost his job, was charged with theft, and served 6 months inside

JGEM lives in Australia. HMRC have not yet reached out that far.
