Tailgate Lock not working
The main central lock on my rear tailgate suddenly stopped working the other day just as I was about to load the car up to go away for a few days! Why do these things always happen at the most inconvenient time?!
Anyway I have now managed to remove the rear inner panel which covers the wiper motor and module for the lock. I first checked the usual culprit namely the rod that rusts inside the handle. Although my rod is rusty the handle is still fully functional. I will look at replacing the rod anyway. When I press the lock/unlock buttons on my key I can hear the relays clicking. I have checked for 12v at the grey connector on the top of the module. I can locate 12v power for both unlocking and locking so power is getting to the module. Looks like something internal has failed. The short wire cable that connects from the rear door handle to the module is all intact and if I pull this the lock doesn`t release. So, is there a way to open the tailgate so I can get at the bolts under the bottom edge to remove and replace the lock module? Some XC90`s seem to have a secondary handle inside the rear tailgate with a 2nd wire cable as an over ride, however mine doesn`t have this. Any idea`s?

Mine packed up yesterday!
Fairly sure it's the solenoid. Got it open by stripping off the cover panel and tapping/hitting the the upper right hand corner, of the mechanism, whilst pressing the open button on the remote. This triggers the solenoid into action. Oddly, the solenoid operates freely to lock it but, it won't unlock without it being tapped. Not sure if it's a serviceable part? Guess I'll be looking for a replacement! |

when mine failed a few years ago -I had to break the plastic /drill into the locking mechanism from inside the tailgate to release the lock and then remove-just ordered new one from Volvo-from recollection there was no secondary release mechanism and I am sure there must be several posts about it?
NB the new lock from Volvo was not as well made as the original(no brass etc) |

I sourced another lock from a Volvo breakers for £45 and swapped it over and it all works fine now. I`ve also changed the problematic metal rod in the handle to a stainless steel rod whilst I was at it before that started playing up.
For all of you with a failed tailgate lock and a rear door that you can`t open I have actually discovered a way to open the tailgate without butchering the old lock to pieces. I`ve made a video and will post it up when I get chance to help others.
