Towing with a XC70
I tow with a 2012 XC70 geartronic. The best way I can describe it is brilliant. We have a twin axle Buccaneer and it performs and tows perfectly. I have owned many tow cars over the years including all the big Land/range Rover models. However I can honestly say the Volvo is one of the best and most relaxing cars I have owned and driven.

I have a 65 plate XC70D4 awd with the towing suspension system.
Recently brought my Amazon back from cornwall on a 4 wheel trailer and it was brilliant one of the best tow cars I have ever had. |

I have 2006 xc70 and have just done a 3750 mile holiday to France towing an 1800kg twin axle Elddis 840 (8ft wide) and the car was fine but fuel consumption was horrendous. In cruise at 65 in France avg 19 in uk at 58 avg 21.Where do folks get the idea that their cars do 30+ mpg towing from. Mine does 35 solo and 20 towing. Ive had a few xc70`s and towed various caravans and none did more than 22mpg.

...well I did on the way back from Cornwall to Chesterfield.
31mpg to be exact, calculated by mileage and full tank fill up. Got 25mpg on way down, traffic on journey down was horrendous. Car avgs up to 34mpg in the week. Sheffield City centre driving with 50/50 mix of 70mph run up dual carriage way and then slow 30mph city roads. Our Elddis is 1500kg fully laden so lighter than your rig and it is a narrower so marginally less frontal area to cause drag. From the minute we set off transmission was in Sport mode so engine holding higher rpm at lower road speed. I did use cruise on and off dependant on how heavy traffic was. I suppose car and van tyre pressures, weight of van, direction of wind, heaviness of YOUR right foot, amount of traffic you encounter, smooth or not so smooth driving styles, rolling resistance of car and van ect....they will all play a part. Driving like a nun. In cruise on a run down to South Wales the car did exactly 40mpg. Round the doors it does around 30 and towing it doesnt bear thinking about
