Excellent work Jim! Regarding the "cool" running, have you cleaned round the cabin temperature thermistor? It's above the interior light (think i mentioned that some time before) so not ideally placed IMHO to sense the "true" cabin temperature.

Heat rises so it might be 24C above your head but only 2C at your feet - ok, bit of an exaggeration but you get the idea!

Also the thermistor is 30 ish years old give or take a bit. I did some research on this recently on the Rover forum because some people were thinking their cars were cooler inside than they once were for the same temperature setting.
Thermistors do degrade with age and their base resistance (measured at 25C) alters. This thread on the Rover forum shows the results i got from testing a thermistor, page 2 is the most relevant :

That should start on Pg2 with my results etc and since then i've found a more cost-effective source of the component i suggested. I ordered 5 of them but because of other things (wheel bearing going on my Coupé) haven't had a chance to experiment yet. Here's the cheaper component, identical in every way to the one on ebay :

Care needs to be taken when soldering them in but that might prove a nice easy fix for you. If not it's down to the location of it up in the roof!
