Default Which Engine?

Hi,
planning to buy a second hand Volvo XC60. Can't decide between the 2.0 litre FWD or the 2.4 litre AWD version. Can anyone tell me the real world fuel consumption for each of these? And are there any other factors that might sway my decision?
Thanks,
Sven

Do you need AWD? That’s your first decision, and looking at your location I guess it might be useful....

The 4 pots would be more ecomomical, but you'd need to balance that against the power you need to get the right varaint for yourself.

Best to test drive them to select.

AWD is good for handlling but with it comes a heavier car with lower mpg.

As for winter, you are probably more aware than I am, living where you do. A FWD car equipped with winter tyres is better that a AWD without them, and an AWD car equipped with winter tyres stops in the similar distance as a FWD with them on too (if you want to get precise, the AWD may take longer with the added weight, but insignificant).

Mine is a 2.4 D4 AWD manual. I’m out in the sticks so 10 miles is my shortest run & im getting 45 or so. About the same on a run - if the speed is kept less than 70. Any more and it drops off .......

This is sound advice - if you get an AWD car for winter and snow and keep it shod with summer car type tyres (especially on R-Design models) then you have largely wasted your money and will be disappointed. Yes you will get better traction when setting off but cornering and stopping will be the same.

If you don't really want to be bothered with keeping 2 sets of tyres, there are some very good all season options around now, whilst they wont match winter tyre performance in the snow they will be a noticeable improvement on normal tyres.

The weight difference between the FWD and AWD cars is only 80Kg, i.e. the weight of a passenger, but the AWD system does reduce the economy slightly because of the extra drag and mass in the drivetrain.

^^^ Good advice. If you are high mileage, FWD makes sense, with all-season tyres. That's what I do. It depends also on whether you drive up any serious hills where you live. I do, and FWD with all-season tyres work EXCEPT when you have the wrong type of snow. Dry snow is great. The tyre sipes grip the snow and you climb the hills easily. Well slushy snow - forget it, and having chains is no use whatsoever in these circumstances. As for deep snow, there's probably no difference between FWD and AWD except that AWD will get you further into trouble before your car refuses to become a snowplough.
I went through the same FWD / AWD debate. I chose FWD because I do 30k (private) miles a year. Has FWD let me down ? Not in winter, but on a couple occasions I have had difficulty on a steep gravel incline in dry summer weather.

too be honest we didnt purposely go for the awd model, test drove various models manuals and autos 2.0l and 2.4l end of the day the car we purchased was the best we could find at the price we could afford the awd was a bonus, but will be looking at all season tyres when current michalins need replacing.

I’ve a FWD 2014 D4 and average around 40mpg. Drops to around 35 pootling around town and up to 45 on motorway cruising.

I keep a pair of wheel socks in the boot.....but in four years have never needed them.

My figures: worst 40mpg, best > 50mpg. Winter temperatures, wet roads and short runs make it worse. Cruise at 70mph in good weather on the motorway and >50mpg is easy.
