Default Headlamp failure, but it isn't the bulb.

My xc60 recently gave the "dipped bulb failure" warning. The drivers side headlamp wasn't working. I replaced the bulb, and the headlamp still wasnt working. I swapped bulbs, and both work in the passenger side headlamp, neither work in the drivers side.

As far as I can tell, both bulbs are correctly mated to the connectors in exactly the same way.

Any suggestions? I haven't checked fuses, surely both bulbs are on the same fuse?

very unlikely to be on the same fuse if you think about it.... Should be your next step.

Default Fuses

Thanks David.

I have just looked through the owners manual. And I can't see a fuse for headlamps or dipped beams. The only lighting related fuses that I can see are for the lighting panel, headlamp leveling and headlamp washing. Aldo the only fuses that appear to be left and right sided are for the parking brake.

I am guessing that the headlamps are covered by one of the primary fuses, and if one of these had blown I would expect more symptoms than a headlamp failure.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

Default thanks

this is sounding beyond my "changing lightbulbs and topping up wiper fluid" level of confidence. I'll take this advice to my mechanic and report back.

thanks

Default the mechanic

took it to an electrical specialist.

between them they decided that it wasn't the ballast module, but the circuit board for the whole headlamp has been fried. and that I need an entirely new headlamp unit.

does this sound right? would the circuit board for the headlamp actually be inside the lamp unit, the cable that connects to the bulb seems to come the engine bay, not the headlamp.

I've been quoted £500 for a new headlamp unit, but I am thinking of trying a breakers yard.

Sounds like they having you over.
I've not stripped down a Volvo headlamp, but I have many others and none of them have any circuit boards inside the headlamp, so I'm assuming all are the same.
