The conclusion, almost...
Hi All,
Apologies it’s been a while for the update. Been a bit busy, you know with a pandemic and all... So the car is finally up and running again after spending lockdown in the engine rebuilders It turns out the fuel pump was definitely seized solid. I’ve been given it back and I’m going to strip it to have a look inside. Apparently I’m just an unlucky so and so. The only thing the rebuild shop said is that it may have been misfuelled at some time in the past Total damage came in a £3k, list of work required on the attached invoice for info. As an aside I can recommend the Dekka independent mechanics. Would have been very easy to end up in a bun fight with the garage who did the earlier cam belt refit The only problem left now is all of the pulling on and off the recovery trucks has naffed up the handbrake. I currently have the message “parking brake requires service” and when driving it advises Something like “parking brake not fully released” |

I am looking to buy a new shape XC90 and this kind of incident certainly makes you think twice.
Question though, how can the fuel pump seizing take out the cam belt? I am just curious. |

The mechanical Very high fuel pressure pump ( 30,000 psi ) is driven by the camshaft. If petrol has been put in the fuel tank by mistake and the car driven for any distance this can rapidly wear out the fuel pump as petrol has very little lubrication properties. This is why most manufacturers say the " fuel system" has to be replaced after running mistakenly on Petrol . I wouldn't let it worry you , its extremely rare for this to happen on any diesel car.

However complete engine failure on the new shape cars is not a one off. There have been a number of threads on this subject for both petrol and diesel.

True, but such is the case with literally any vehicle brand/model and/or engine. When I hear of an indestructible engined-car - I’ll be the first in line to but one

I remember Honda used to brag about the vtec engine. 15 million made and not a single failure I think the dealer told us. I am not sure I believed it then, or now....
