Looking at buying a 2006 S60 2.0T Auto
Hi all,
I'm seriously considering an S60 2.0T Auto. I've previously run a 2001 V40 1.6 for 56k in just under 3 years. Faultless! I'm doing somewhere between 15k-20k (mainly mway) miles a year so it needs to be reliable. What do I need to watch out for in an S60? Any common faults? Real world MPG etc. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. Also, what kit for bluetooth phone/streaming do I need? I had a Yatour in my V40 and it was fantastic. Cheers Si

Check if gearbox oil has been flushed, get done if not. Gearbox should change smoothly.
Check history for regular engine oil changes. See if PCV system is working ok (put a rubber glove over the oil filler cap and secure with elastic band...it should suck the air out of the glove (showing the system is holding vacuum), if it makes the glove inflate, this means PCV system is blocked and will need a bit of work. 2.0T with autobox is no rocketship, though if it feels unusually slow you may want to order a new Pierburg TCV (turbo control valve) if mileage is 100,000 onwards as they can wear out and withhold boost. Infact, this is something I would just buy anyway, as a maintenance item. Can pickup the pierberg sensors for £30 online. TCV is clipped to the left hand side of airbox with 3 small rubber pipes connected, so is a very easy job to change them. Suspension control arms can wear, relatively straightforward job for any garage. Generally these are pretty solid cars cars which can do big miles if looked after. These P2 cars are beginning to show their true Volvo longevity in my opinion.... I've seen two X and Y reg V70's on the road around my area in the last few months... and when I consider that those cars are now 20 years old and still rolling around when everyone else seems to be driving very new PCP finance cars, it puts things into perspective for me. Iv got one and it goes better than I expected, town and country lane driving with quite a heavy foot results in 26mpg.
Its mot is due soon so long as it passes or minor fails Il get it remapped which will take it to around 220hp. Hanbrakes are sh1t. Suspension needs a refresh. Brake vaccuum can fail, £100 will get you a new pump, second hand valve and a fuse. Handlings a bit wooly but this is probably the bushes being old otherwise Id recommend. |

Honestly, I think the 2.0T is a very underrated/overlooked engine in the S60.
They cost peanuts to buy because nobody wants them despite them being exactly the same in terms of reliability as any other Volvo 5 pot. They're reasonably economical given the number of cylinders, flat torque curve and 180bhp. If I drove it sensibly, It would average 28-30mpg which is significantly better than my S40 T5. And if you want more power, a simple remap gives you 220BHP and 320Nm, which for everyday driving is loads of power. I'd certainly buy another one. |

Mine will see high 30s on a run MPG wise if I'm sat at 70 on cruise, even mid 40s if I drop to 60 MPH.
Round town it's high teens, but mine is an Auto and is Stage 3 BSR tuned. Make sure you get an SE at least if you can, mine has optional 13 speaker stereo which is very good and the soft leather option which a bit more comfortable and seems to have aged well. I bought a 20 quid lead off ebay which plugged into the 10cd changer slot on the back of the HU850 to give me an aux input, then got a 10 quid adapter to change that to bluetooth so no big costs for that. Make sure gearbox changes fine once warm, I've changed fluid a few times in mine now and it's still 100% perfect at 120000 miles. Engine mounts wear out, front lower arms wear, arb links wear, but theres nothing to really worry about if you get a good one. |

Hi all,
Thanks for replies. I really appreciate it. I hadn't thought about tuning. Can I improve the economy aswell by doing that? I was over the moon with my old V40 and the Volvo bug has got me. Aslong as I can get mid 30's on a run, I'm happy with that. I never set the cruise at more than 74-75 mph anyway. Its a 56 plate with 83k on the clock,so with care, should get many miles out of it, and yes, it's an SE.

No problem getting mid 30s on a run if that's what you are looking for.
They're reliable cars, with comfy seats and a decent sound system, they're a great way to sit on a motorway and dont disgrace themselves on a b road if you spend a bit on suspension. Good luck with the one you have found. |

do you def need an auto?
manual cheaper to tax in some engines due to better emissions and less likely to fail

Hi Barry,
Yes, I need an auto as I'm disabled and the tax doesn't matter as I am eligable for free road tax. I know what you're getting at though. Cheers
