It's possible, if a bit crude, to check the AWD by trying an"energetic" start on wet grass or other slippery surface. If the AWD is defective, front wheels will slip and rears won't cut in. Can also be done by getting all 4 wheels off the ground, starting the car and engage gear...all 4 wheels should rotate.
Wouldn't write off a the possibility of a wheel bearing, although unlikely as they generally don't fail without warning, but it's always possible. The car can be perfectly fine, or appear so, at an MOT and fail very soon after (just happened to my neighbours granddaughter...I found a broken rear spring days after an MOT).

I bow to greater experience here Clan and agree with your comments, particularly the last point about feeling play in a noisy bearing. I would add that a stethoscope placed on the bearing housing is a very good way of detecting noisy bearings.

If AWD's fubarred, then it's really obvious IMHO, because rampant torque steer.

Would you see that with the coupling failure or would it operate just as a FWD? I'm surprised at torque steer if it operates in FWD only mode but as I have no experience other than with working (note, not working on) Honda AWD systems, I'm not experienced enough to understand why torque steer would be pronounced.

If FWD only (and it happened twice on our old XC70 of this era) then it was really apparent because junction scrabble, and the torque steer effect (presumably) caused because no drive was going rearwards.

Interestingly, a neighbour has a FWD only D3 model from 2016 and he reports the same with his.

THAT I can sympathise with. Happens with my V70 D5 in both dry and wet, particularly when wheels not straight ahead but set to a turn angle and heavy boot applied.

What is junction scrabble?

My Prius just passed MOT but I am pretty sure the front wheel bearing is shot, which I noticed within a week of the MOT. But no mention of it in the list of adviced repairs.
Shot AGAIN, common problem that they only last <100k. Right bearing and it grinds when turning left, but only when going forward, strangely enough.

agreed with above - my wheel bearing was making a racket but wasn't detectable with the usual wheel tests.

However once I got the wheel off and rotated the hub by hand you could SEE the resistance.

So this is where I'm at so far:

On the flat I get a rotational "ssshhhhhhh" or whirring.

When turning to the right that noise disappears and all is well.

When travelling up hill I get the rotational clicking and it sounds really quite broken!

Wheel bearing?
