Default Anti-Skid Service Required

I had the same problem on my 2003 XC90. I was informed by the dealer it was due to dirty connections on the plug in connections although I never found out exactly which ones.

Default "anti skid service reqiruired"

Text window says "anti skid service reqiruired" and 023 pops up as a code. Can anyone help? I've heard that this is a result of a failed YAW sensor. This apparently can occur if water is spilt on the passenger floor, which my wife was very successful in doing. Has anyone heard of this and can I repair it myself? Thanks for your time.

I don't know what type of reader you used but the fault codes that appear on the PPC code reader relating to the Yaw sensor would be under ABS.....

00A0
00A1
00A2
00A3

See http://www.ppc-diagnostic.com/codes/eABS/ for more info.

The unit itself is EXTREMELY well sealed so I would be suprised if it was affected by water spilled on the floor unless the water got into the plug that connects it to the wiring and caused a short maybe. The sensor is on a bracket sitting off the sub floor so it would need a lot of water to reach the plug.

It's not a big job to change the unit, it's under the black finned plate beneath the drivers seat (UK model) Set well towards the back of the car inside the hole reavealed. The sensor costs about £400 so you want to be sure that's what it is first.

Roy MacDonald,

Thank you for your reply. With your knowledgable response, I think that I can rule that out. It just sounded like an easy solution at the moment. I'm trying to avoid getting hosed at the dealer. I purchased this vehicle 900 miles ago "as is", so no warranty. Everything appears to be in working order, brakes, traction control, etc. Should I ignore it like the flashing clock on my VCR? This is my fourth Volvo, 1st with cup holders.

No No No and No. The yaw sensor is fundamental to the saftey of your car and the AWD and ABS systems cannot be working properly if it isn't functioning. You can't test it without risking writing the car off and you really don't want to find out what can happen if you get into a situation where it isn't working and it's needed. The US government considers ABS saftey systems incorporating a yaw sensor so important it's introducing legislation to make them madatory on all new cars sold in America. This type of system is going to be madatory from 2012 in the USA and the British Government is looking at a white paper about it at the moment. The accident reduction rate with this type of system fitted is amazing. 60% in Germany.

The Volvo Club pages (link at top of page ....VOC Home) have video of how the system works.

I just checked and the sensor costs £327 in the UK. I'd at least get the error codes thorougly checked out...took my Volvo specialist about 15 min to check and decide what it was. Then about 20 min to swop out the sensor.

Roy

P.S. The car has to be moving sideways or rotating for the sensor to send info the ABS ECU would act on that's why I doubt you've been able to test if it's working and if it isn't the car will turn over or go off the road. (Read the Yellow warning lable on the bracket in the photos.)

I don't think tip my car over to check it out. I bet you're right. I was half joking on the other post. I found a local specialist to check it out. Thanks for your time.

Must say I wondered if I needed to worry about it when mine played up and it was only when I looked into what it did I realized how important it was, and what an advance in saftey it was. Probably as big as the introduction of seat belts.

All the best.
Roy

Unhappy Anti Skid Service Required

Budding DIY Mechanic....runs out of ideas ...to the dealer you must go.... Ouch this is going to hurt my very empty post xmas wallet....I know I am going to get hood winked!

some background....

I procured a xc90 2.4 SE on a 2003 plate, just over a year ago and apart from various intermittent "Reverse service required" which goes out on a restart the car has been a pleasure to own....until recently..... I had the sloshing water and have now cleared the blocked sunroof drains (thanks for the advise) *I had almost 3 litres of water I extracted with a Vax pipe system. I also have the Anti Skid Service Required and the fault codes 124 and then 023 on the message window after I complete the reset with the trip-o-meter and position 1 / 11 process and using the diagnostic PDF

http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/pdf/850_...ault_codes.pdf

I have determined the following

TCM-0124 Control module. Internal fault
TCM-0124 Control unit. Internal fault
TCM-0124 Linear pressure solenoid SLT. Faulty signal

TCM-0023 Engine speed (RPM) sensor. Signal missing. Intermittent fault
TCM-0023 Engine speed (RPM) sensor. Signal missing. Permanent fault
TCM-0023 Input speed sensor. Signal missing. Intermittent fault
TCM-0023 Input speed sensor. Signal missing. Permanent fault
TCM-0023 Transmission input speed sensor. Signal missing
TCM-0023 Transmission input speed sensor. Signal missing. Intermittent fault
TCM-0023 Transmission input speed sensor. Signal missing. Permanent fault
TCM-0023 Transmission speed sensor. Signal missing. Intermittent fault
TCM-0023 Transmission speed sensor. Signal missing. Permanent fault
TCM-0023 Vehicle speed sensor. Signal missing. Intermittent fault
TCM-0023 Vehicle speed sensor. Signal missing. Permanent fault

So ( I think) I either have a faulty Yaw Sensor module (~£500) or a failed sensor of wheel position 4 (Which wheel this is I am unsure of).....

I have taken out the yaw sensor and ensured the terminals are clean, but I have no idea if the water has got into the unit.....

I have tried to find an independent Volvo expert to have a look but apparently they do not exist in Camberwell - South London

IS there anyone out there that has had the same and can provide any further advise before I take the car and and get stung? ( an example from my first visit was a request to reprogramme a key fob which ended in a £110 bill for a new fob, without even asking...

Any feedback would be appreciated
