Yes, seems to me the problem is not the 'plastic' manifold but the clogging EGR valve causing overheating. I thought the EGR valves were sorted ages ago on these cars, obviously I was wrong. It amazes me some of the problems on modern cars leading to recalls. Some of these seem to be just penny pinching or bad design e.g. the V70 with it's drive belts and also power steering pipes.
My wife's year old VW Polo has had two recalls in it's first year, one for the handbrake and another for a seatbelt buckle, hardly cutting edge engineering issues surely!

The EGR Valves themselves are no more troublesome than any other , The problem has been the EGR Cooler . If the plastic manifold melts it must be uncooled gas going straight into the manifold i would assume ,( There is a vacuum controlled Flap which can bypass the cooler under the control of the ECU .)
