After reading all thi thread i have problems sorting out my arse from my elbow so here are some, ihope, simple questions that ,hopefully, will be match by answer this idiot will understand.

IU have a 52 plate V70 D5 auto with a HU-803 radio unti. The FM is hissing and doing a bloody goo radio luxemborg reception impression (for those that old) the FM bit serches and doesnt find stations even thought they are programmed in ie pos 1 is Radio 2 but decides to go walkabou looking for it.
The CD and FM bis work ok with no hissing

Now is it the FM section that is playing up?

If i by a HU-803 from ebay what do i need to look for/or ask before buying moel nos etc

can i just swap the radio portion of the unit over?

If i install it and it works ok, ( i dont use the wheel controls so not fussed if they dont operte) will the next visit to the main dealer bugger it all up?

Could it be something else playing tricks with the FM side of things ( Amp?)and will i have the same alledged problems

The rear view autodip doesnt work .same problems in changing it over?

Thats about it . but if there is anything i may have missed just give me a prod

Ron

These include radio/stereo head units (AUM), CD players (IAM), self dipping rear view mirrors (UEM), speedo heads (DIM) and several others to name but a few.

The dealers cannot over write the software in these units. Also second hand integrated key fobs (KIR) cannot be re-programmed to another car even by the dealers. Although these need a software download to be programmed, the dealer also needs the two unique codes that are supplied with the original packaging for each remote. These codes are not kept on record.
I have recently purchased a DDM from e-bay only to find it would not work and could not be re- programmed. I really don't understand why Scrap Yard Breakers continue to sell these items, knowing full well they are useless on other cars. I managed to source a new Switch module for £250.00 , awaiting delivery so I can have it programmed to my v70 d5 . Fingers crossed problem solved

I did hear you could reuse one if it was deprogramed from the original car first using VIDA before removal. Only a dealer would be able to do it though as VIDA has to contact Volvo Sweden via the internet. I guess that is the catch.

My father in law has an XC90 that the DDM needs replacing. I have purchased a 2nd hand unit which I fitted today only to find it doesn't work. I was wondering if it needed programming or reprogramming. I have vida but that only says the module and car are not talking to each other.

it will only work in the car it was built with due to security and serial numbers ...

The DIM, DDM, and radio can be swapped but it's important to match about the same car years. I put a HU-803 from a 2004 car, in my 2003 originally with a HU-613 and everything works, steering wheel controls, lights, etc.

I also have a DIM from another car (same side numbers) and it works as it should.

Not sure about the CEM, from memory it can be swapped but must be reprogrammed - I stand corrected.

I believe the ECM (engine control module) cannot be swapped between cars.

Here's someone who swapped the DDM without programming

So yes, the Volvo dealer will say these can't be swapped, mainly because these don't always match, and they don't do swaps any way using used parts. "Won't work" in this case means "we don't do this".

Just to add further input to this thread, my S60 must have had the head unit replaced before I got it.

Like countless others, ostensibly the replaced stereo works fine, but buttons are not backlit at night (the display is, though), steering wheel controls don't work, nor does AVC (and advanced diagnostics show it doesn't receive any speed signal).

Seeing a few on ebay, typically advertised with the year and model removed from, and noting comments from people saying that seems to be relevant, I bought one from the same age of car.

Installed it following the stated good practice relating to battery disconnection, and it behaves exactly like the one already installed - works, but no backlit buttons, no steering wheel controls and no AVC.

Wish I knew what ths secret was for making another unit work fully.

OR everything you read on forums as it seems some people are right and stuff wont work, but as other people have proven they are wrong
