Hi, am new to this site - so be gentle with me.

I have recently brought a 1999 S40 1.8i. i get a huge loss of power when the car gets to 3000rpm, this happend in all gears - however when i change a gear it picks back up again until i get to 300rpm. by power loss i mean loss of acceleration.

Hi

A few things to check first:

Air filter, spark plugs, leads, coil packs (don't know if your engine has these)

Then check the exhaust isn't blocked in some way by the contents of the catalytic converter or boxes having collapsed and stopping air flow.

Does it rev freely at standstill?

Yes it is the GDI engine - after some research have found that they were deseigned to run on high octane unleaded, something to do with a mitisubuishi/vovle patnership, can anyone confirm this.

when idleing i can rev car past 6000rpm no probs.

I have had the engine management light come on once for about 2-3 minutes then go back out.
