If it’s reliability and fuel economy and your engine is mechanically sound why not consider mapped fuel injection, a kit for two SU is around £1800 with all parts needed, it’s closed loop and self regulating, mid throttle cruising is where FI comes into play especially if it’s closed loop it will run the engine as lean as is safe at any throttle, rpm and map combination
You can even have two maps one for economy and one for maximum push

What a brilliant idea the idea of using a CO meter to balance and adjust the carburettors turned out to be. A stroke of genius Clan well done. See the GAM thread for details:

Using a CO meter to balance and adjust the two SU carburettors was an excellent idea, and has worked well.

Yesterday (Sunday 21st May) I had the opportunity to take GAM to the Amazon Love-in at Southwold, some 128 miles distant. The first 2/3 was fast (70MPH) dual carriageway (the A14), and the third Suffolk A roads (average speed maybe 30MPH), GAM performed flawlessly.

I am delighted to report that the 260 mile round trip (measured by GPS - the speedometer reads about 10% slow and so only showed 225 miles) took 33lts of Morrison's very cheapest E10 (8 gallons), which gives 33MPG. That is a really good improvement, and due in the main to tuning the twin carburettors properly.
