Default Removing lighter unit?

Hi

Having been successful wiring a 140 hazard flasher unit with my LED lights (and getting the dash tell tale to illuminate) I wanted to fit the actual unit in place of the lighter.

Before I cause unnecessary damage does anybody have experience of how these are removed?....seems that the body will spin a number of degrees but can't get to pop out with 'reasonable' pressure.

thanks

Jim

Jim;

If it is an OE Cig Lighter, the shell threads on from behind the panel. Try reaching behind the dashboard and unthreading it...

Cheers

Thanks Ron.

OE as far as I can tell.
I can spin the body behind the dash (allowing for some chaffing) multiple times after application of WD40, but nothing seems to loosen. Body is moving separately to the front chrome disc.
Is the body intended to unwind from the front chrome disc?....if so am wondering if PU has crossthreaded.

It should be a thin metal sleeve threaded onto the body, it’s thin and easy to mistake for the main body, try taking some photos behind the dash
I used a short length of rubber hose split to fit over this gave a bit more grip to un screw the sleeve, once you have it rotating it will come off easy

Jim;

Yes...the thin "body" or shell should unscrew from the rest of the assembly...being threaded sheetmetal, the precision of the threads is not particularly high, so it sounds like it is not engaging, and loosening as you spin, but, but spinning in place...I've also had this happen, just try applying a bit of force in the direction of removal as you spin the shell...I realize that you're not trying to force and possibly break things, but just a bit move assertiveness is called for...

Cheers

Photos attached of the lighter assembly salvaged from my 142. I expect that it is the same / similar to the Amazon lighter. You can see the thin metal sleeve / shell which threads on to the threads on the base of the lighter socket and clamps the lighter to the dash panel.

Remove the heater element. With a rubber dishwashing glove fitted on your hand (or something suitably sticky) stick your thumb or a very fat finger into the socket assembly to hold it in place. Reach up behind the dash and unscrew the sleeve / shell which sounds like it is already loose. The shell will drop back and you should be able to pull the socket out and detach it.

Yes that's the one!

After several hours of cursing and spinning what in hindsight is the entire body and directly prior to attempting to get some soft jaws on it, a lucky shot of WD40 fired from behind saw it (to my amazement) virtually fall apart.
Must have melted some corrosion seizing the threads.

Key to the misunderstanding here and having taken some pics on the phone behind the dash, was assuming that the screwed part on the outer body WAS the thread on the inner which needed undoing.
