Default fuel filter 480

The 480 forum seems to be down at the moment, so hopefully someone here can help.

I've been having some trouble with a fuel leak, which I finally traced to the pipe between the fuel filter and the pump/sender unit. Unfortunately this pipe is a real swine to remove. Volvo, in their wisdom, decided to use some screw-shut unions which seem resistant to removal. This may be useful if you want to avoid your pipes coming undone accidentally, but it's a real pain in the arse if you actually want to take them off.

The fuel gauge sender end of the pipe resisted being undone so well that my attempts to turn the union resulted in the plastic of the sender breaking. I have new sender. Unfortunately I am having a similar problem at the fuel filter end of the pipe. This suffers even more for being exposed to all the road muck a car picks up in 110,000 miles.

Does anyone have any advice on an effective way of getting these unions undone? At the moment I am considering simply replacing every pipe in the system as it will be easier and involve much less cursing, but obviously more expense.

Please help, my sanity is at risk.

Thanks, Ed

Hey Ed, sympathies on the fuel pipes and also on the 480europe forum being down! I've emailed Daniel to see what's going on but no reply yet.

The Fuel filter is a real pig to get off, did mine lastyear. I left it soaked in WD40 overnight which seemed to do the trick as it was all rusted/corroded up. Really bad design I agree.

Might be easier to just replace your pipework if the parts aren't too ott.

Good luck with it.

Stu.

Thanks for the reply Stu. Pipe replacement has been put on hold as for a double-barrelled 2m(ish) plastic pipe with a couple of threaded metal connectors on either end, Volvo are asking the princely sum of £195+vat. I would be surprised if they cost even a tenth of that to produce.

I've bought a new filter as well as the short, leaking pipe that has to be replaced (that was £30) and soaked the whole lot in WD-40 yesterday. Hopefully a bit more swearing and the damn thing will come off tonight.

We'll see.

Ed
