Default Changing from 205/50/17 - 225/45/17

Hello Guys,

I have a V50 R-design 2.0D. It has 205/50/R17 93W tyres at the moment which need changing. One suggestion has been to use 225/45/R17 which are almost identical in circumference. However has anyone had any problems with the wider tyres?
Also the Michelin Pilot Sport 3's I am looking at are 91 Y rated. Does the lower weight rating matter? I see that some of the original tyres are 91 rated.

Many thanks,

Mark

Those should fit just fine.

You'll get better grip and ride, and lose a marginal amount of fuel economy at M-way speeds.

Loading would depend if you go 4 up with luggage - IIRC your car is 57/43 front to rear, and the kerb weight around 1450kg plus you so you should be able to do the math to figure out of the max loading is OK For your car.

Inform your insurer... formality, but they can be gits about the small detail sometimes.

Mark,

the "new" tyres will be Slightly WIDER & be less "Thicker"

225 is the Width (Tread) size & 45 is the "wall" size so you'll actually be putting MORE tread on the road & the tyres will be "Thinner" (Between the road surface & the alloy ect )

You may find the Ride Quality a little Harsher but overall there should be no problems with the new tyres

OH!!! NOTE .. being Wider they MAY catch/rub on the inner aches as you go to full lock Just check beforehand just in case

as t5_monkey said, inform your insurer. If you were unfortunate to have a blow out or tyre related issue with a non-recommended tyre size/load rating fitted, they would undoubtedly refuse to pay out if they hadn't been informed.

Also, the maths isn't quite as simple as t5 mentioned. The load on each tyre is dynamic and will change with cornering, braking, accellerating, speed etc. A simple consideration of static load distribution will be massively underestimated.

Thanks for the advice everyone.
I checked with the tyre shop and they can do 94W rated tyres for €10 more per tyre, so I think I will go with that. My only slight worry is that the 7in rim will be too narrow. i have seen calculators which show the 225 as the widest tyre for a 7in rim, but will it make the tyre conform to a funny shape?

I think you'll be alright on 7's - I'm on 7.5's and they're fine.

interestingly, ride is better on 225's than 215's and 205's (had all three on mine)

Thanks again for the help.

I emailed Michelin today and got a response within 30 mins (which really impressed me!). They say that the 225 are fine on 7 in rims, so that's it ordering the tyres tomorrow.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Just as an aside, Kwik Fit are offering 25% off tyres at the moment. Makes a big difference on a set of 4 (£140 on Contis and £170 on Michelins).

I had the same thoughts as the tyres are so much cheaper and more choice for winter grips????

Anyway Volvo said NO! Tyre manufactures said not a problem as did my insurers (Admiral). As it turned out managed to get the correct size in a Uniroyal Winter Tyre so no need to change.

The difference is less than the wear from a new to old tyre so its up to you.
