Default Sat Nav problem

Hi this is my first post. I bought a XC90 last week it’s 2005 with Sat Nav. Everything else works and am enjoying the car but the Sat Nav screen pops up turns on and you can control the menu with the steering wheel control but after about 10-15 seconds it just goes blank and pops back down. Anyone got any ideas as to how to fix it? It seems ok and I had a look at the disk in the DVD player under the seat and it is very scratched. But I thought it used a hdd? Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Hi,

There are a number of different systems. I believe this will clarify a bit (if I'm wrong, please correct me).

The "OLD" RTI-CD SYSTEM Models before and up to MY2006

The MMM-P 2001 SYSTEM (2006-2008). Part #31370159

Also known as "MMM"

S80 184 MAY 2002-MAY 2006
V70 285 MAY 2002-MAY 2007
XC90 MAY 2003-MAY 2006
V50 MAY 2003-MAY 2007
S40 544 MAY 2004-MAY 2007
S60 MAY 2004-MAY 2009
XC70 295 MAY 2005-MAY 2007
C70 542 MAY 2006-MAY 2007
C30 MAY 2007-MAY 2007

The RTI MMM+ HDD SYSTEM (2007-2011). Part #31456966 (NOT V70/XC70)

Also known as "MMM+"
Updates for this model consist of 2 DVD's. copied to the internal HARDDISK (HDD)

C30 MAY 2007-MAY 2012
S40 MAY 2007-MAY 2012
V50 MAY 2007-MAY 2012
C70 MAY 2007-MAY 2013
XC90 MAY 2007-MAY 2014

The MMM2 SYSTEM (2008-2010) #31384666 / DENSO #464110-0190
Previous Volvo Part number: 31357737

Also known as "MMM2"

S80 MAY 2006-MAY 2011
V70 MAY 2007-MAY 2011
XC70 MAY 2007-MAY 2011
XC60 MAY 2008-MAY 2010

So if I'm correct, your 2005 does not have an internal harddrive and will rely on reading the disk. If the disk is damaged it may need to be replaced.

Perhaps some kind soul has an extra or is willing to make a copy.
I drive a 2011 (MMM+) so my discs are most likely not compatible with your system.

Try turning it on without a disc in or just the door open and you should get the message door open on the screen and this will stay on.
When it turns off does the radio etc stay on or also go off?

Try turning it on in diagnostic mode, and then read any errors it may display, and run through the test routines

To enable diagnostic mode:
1. Ensure the vehicle is completely asleep - at best doors closed and locked for at least 10 minutes, no remote control activity
2. Open vehicle, insert key, turn to PosI
3. Press ENTER, BACK, ENTER, BACK etc alternating continuously from button to button throughout the cold boot up sequence. You can use the steering wheel controls or the nav remote control, both are the same
4. The nav starts up in diagnostic mode, you can now run many tests and diagnose the system

I will try the diagnostic mode when I get home. The radio and everything else stays on just the screen that pops back down. Thanks for the quick responses.

I tried taking the disk out and it just says insert disk and close door but still goes off after 20 seconds.

Hi, suggest you may have a power problem to the satnav. The connections at the back of the reader under the seat are a tad exposed to little feet, well worth a check. Also the MOST connector (fibre optic). If the latter is disconnected, the radio etc (DIM) will be off too.

I would next try the display unit. I have never tried to move mine, but could be a bad connection there. I see no threads on failure of this so doubt if other have had problems so unlikely the cause.

My experience is based on ICM failure, but then with mine, satnav, parking sensors and cd would fail at the same time. Radio was always fine. This was evidenced by the selector mutton never giving the cd option. This happened after 10 mins working fine, but always ok after long power off. This was indeed the ICM and could be your problem.

For the latter I used lucas at Volvodiagnostic.com, who will give a lifetime guarantee with his repair/replacement. I can recommend him.

Hope this helps

I think your right with it being a power issue. Even in diagnostic mode it just turns off after a few seconds. Will check the conetions on the unit. I know the parking sensors has an issue as there not working and have not tried a cd yet. I will let u know. And thanks again for. The help.

No need to indert CD, just turn the selector knob (right knob on radio) to select CD as option. When sat nav not working does this still give CD as an option?
