Me confused! Do you mean single carriageway, two way traffic roads as in "A" roads for example or do you mean dual carriageway, two way traffic?

One carriageway with two way traffic, not a dual carriageway.

Yes, to original post.

I have a 1990 745 B200F (LH2.4) manual M47 box. Over the many years of ownership I have had, and still get mpg in the range of 24 - rarely 42. It all depends on how sympathetic I am to moving forward and road conditions! End of post. Bob

I am not sure you will get that even at 65mph on the motorway constantly...
No problem at all, in my experience.
(Surely not a year-round average though, I didn't click the link)
I got 40mpg on a trip to that there london and back in a 2.0 NA 740 one time,
calculated correctly by miles and fillups.

Edit : my average all-year is still 31mpg with a turbo, but lately who knows? (odo died)
Worst was a NA auto 2.3, probably about 28mpg.

At age 20 I had a Triumph GT6. That had a 2L straight 6 engine. I remember it was quite good on fuel considering the size of the engine and the heavy foot of a 20 year old. Happy days. I couldn't see me climbing in and out of a GT6 now.

Big engine, light car, engine doesn't have to work too hard so economy is generally better.

Smaller engine generally has to work harder so uses as much, if not more fuel, for similar performance levels. Maybe the carbs needed balancing on the TC Sptifire powered Herald - i remember one of my V* SD1s dropped to about 18mpg because the carbs neeeded balancing.

Balanced them and 28mpg was restored - even when i gave it a severe thrashing and covered 35 miles in 23 minutes - do the maths!

I balanced the carbs by ear with the sports air cleaners removed and listening to each carb with a length of pipe and funnel pressed to my ear. Only way I knew at the time.
