I too made a rear hub puller in the 1970s.Still in use.Made from a pipe flange and drilled out with 5 holes for the studs. This has a "top hat" welded on ,drilled, with a bolt in the centre.
I lift rear wheel,in first gear, gradually tighten my 5 wheel nuts till it cracks off.Ensure there are plenty of threads in the wheel nut before the load goes on so as not to damage stud threads.I also count number of turns when removing castle nut, and resecure to same count.Put copper slip grease on taper, for easy removal next time.Never failed yet. |

quick tip 1: to stop the hub from turning whilst you have both hands on the puller, leave the car in gear and the opposite wheel on the ground.
quick tip 2: tighten the puller as much as you can and leave it like that (under tension) for a couple of minutes. finish your beer and then give it one more turn. it should pop off.. YMMV but this worked a treat for me. |

Good tips, I was a little wary of putting too much strain through the drivetrain, especially when hitting it with a big hammer. but what worked was getting it tight as possible, leaving it overnight and then a hefty blow with the hammer and it was off.
It’s now all back together, (those springs are a pig) but I will have to remove it again to replace the missing retaining clip, but at least it’s all copper eased and I'm now an 'Expert' Thanks guys for all your input. PS. Found a great source online with all the P1800 service manuals that I downloaded and printed, is the same anywhere for the PV manuals |
