Winters tyres, snow chains or just rely on the AWD, any advice?

Depends where you are going and when. I would seek advice from a reliable local source. Personally, I wouldn't rely on AWD alone on a twisty, snow covered and possibly icey mountain road.

All depends where you are going to ski?

In some European countries, it is mandatory to have chains, but would at least suggest, a good set of winter tyres. (All season)

Austria have mandatory law on chains in winter. Not sure about Switzerland.

Sweden have a law on "dubbed" (studded) tyres.

You can, however, buy normal winter tyres in the UK (they look the same as the studded ones but obviously without studs). Makes much more noise and will affect fuel economy by about 10%.

Good thing to have though.

Going to Switzerland. I know you need winter tyres by law on your car when you live there, not sure about UK cars 'on holiday'. No idea if I will have to drive on snow at all - depends upon conditions - maybe a set of chains is worth it just in case.

Blimey RRP for Volvo XC60 snow chains is £400. FRFVolvo will do a good price but still way too much for a short holiday. At least Halfords have a set for £55 http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/s...A2-VYm2FMRY7aX
