Question Strange noises from brake pedal

Dear All,

I'm a new forum member with a problem (car, not me). I have a 2003 XC90 D5 which I guess is one of the first of the line. It has 76000 miles on the clock.

There is a hissing/whooshing noise (like air escaping from somewhere) when I release the brake pedal followed immediately by a squeal/squeak sound. There are no noises when pressing the pedal or while just driving along but the noises occur whenever you release the brake pedal after stopping or slowing down. Does anyone know what this could be?

Also, another quick question of I may....is it safe to change one of the rear shocks (self levelling ones I think) or should they be changed in pairs>

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Did you ever get an answer to the hissing sound? My car has just started doing this too, but with no squeak.

got the same problem with mine, took it to a volvo garage which confirmed it was the servo working and is not a major problem, so carried on driving and after a couple of weeks noise has gone and i had no braking problems either, bit of a mystery, mines a 2003 xc90 aswell

Interesting - Mine's going in to an indie tomorrow. I've lost no braking at all, and everything seems to work as it always has, but I'd hate to lose all servo pressure suddenly as its a heavy car to stop without assistance. As its my wife and kids main car, I'm reluctant to leave it a few weeks to see what happens!

I'll see what the guy says tomorrow, although by his own admission, he's never heard of this in an XC90 before. If it is a duff servo, it'll be pretty pricey I'm sure.

Ian, it looks as if it is indeed the brake servo. Although rare on the XC90, it is apparently quite common on the V70. There is a seal inside the servo which can tear after time, giving the hissing sound. Unfortunately the unit is a sealed unit, so repair entails fitting a whole new servo. Part from Volvo is about £350, although I found a breaker who has one for £140. I'm going for the new part, fitted by an indie this weekend hopefully.

My "hiss" seems to have got worse over the last few days.

I have a servo for sale if anyone needs it. Its from a 2005 T6, but assume they are the same (would need to check first).
