Default Satnav maps - Volvo RTI

The maps on the V70 I've just bought are old - 2012.
I believe the most recent maps are 2017.
Are there any options other than paying Volvo nearly £100 for the map update ?

For a 2010 V70 the most recent are listed as autumn 2016 on Volvo's web site.

I know of no other way to update than buying a box with the DVD's from Volvo.

I wouldn't worry too much about it , I would never spend over £100 on updated maps where 99.9% of the roads are still the same as 10 years ago ... There is also that £2.50 RAC map book , remember those ?

I find a smartphone, such as iPhone or a Samsung does the trick too. If you have one, then use the sat nav on that. There's regular free updates to maps, plus the benefit of it being a phone to make calls, send e-mails etc. They can be expensive to buy outright, but there's some great deals on them nowadays on "pay as you go", or on a Contract basis.

I wouldn't spend £100 to update the maps on a built-in sat nav either... I'd rather use my phone.

I much prefer to have the navigation built into the car. Not yet another thing sitting on the dashboard.
When I drive my car, I stow the phone, with charger cable connected, in the center console storage compartment. There's even less reason to pick it up when driving the 2016 XC70 we also have, as it can access the SMS on the phone too.

I understand wanting to use the sat nav as intended but the quality & speed cant compete with a smartphone.

Get yourself a good handsfree holder (under £10 for the magnet type) and pocket the change

The only comment I would make regarding the use of mobile phones or portable sat nav units as against the built in sat nav in my P3 XC70 '12 is that although a mobile phone etc stuck on the window at first looks untidy, it is actually better placed in the lowest bottom right corner of the screen than is the low mounted screen in the dash. You can glance at the window mounted unit barely taking your eyes off the road while looking at the low mounted built-in screen will mean your eyes off the road for more time than you would like. So long as you place the window mount in the area where the phone doesn't mask the view of the road but merely the unneeded view of the bonnet, the set-up is ergonomically safer than that provided by Volvo. I felt that the demise of the P2 pop-up sat nav screen was a retrograde step from a driving safety point of view.

Mine sits on the air vents , with audio guidance there’s no great need to look at the screen all the time.

I have an import and the sat nav is a video player and Japanese sat nav. So, Tom Tom in the corner on the passenger side. When needed it tells me where to go ( like the wife) and best of all is up to date with speed limits and warns me to slow down. Works for me, thought it may be of use.

How often do Volvo update their maps? and I suppose it might be nice to find out how old the maps are on my car. Is there a way for me to do that?
