Had to call out RAC Homestart a couple of days ago as the Beastie wouldn't start. The engine seemed to be catching but just not firing up. Glow plugs checked out okay, as did the injectors/fuel supply. Patrol checked air hoses and felt there was a lack of air to the engine for starting. He examined various hoses etc and the engine eventually fired up as he was squeezing the large black hose which runs from the engine towards the radiator. He had a look at the turbo as well, as he thought it was sluggish. Said it was a bit gummed up/worn, but with a bit of tinkering and engine revving it seemed to kick in better. He also said he thought the wastegate was sticking. Possible diagnosis was a blockage in the airflow which had cleared.
Car has been driving really well recently (apart from the bizarre issue in my last thread) and now the turbo response has improved it's smoother and more responsive. BUT... the starting problem has remained when the engine is cold. It takes about 4 or 5 long cranks to get the engine half running and whimpering; then it takes about 10-15 seconds before she kicks in and fires up properly. It's as if the throttle doesn't really work until then - despite a lot of grey/brown smoke. I'm hoping it's nothing major....

Mine only gave problems when the glowplugs went. How did you test yours? The other thing that comes to mind is the cold start device, adjustment of which requires a dial indicator and pliers, rotating the cable until timing increases 0.2-25mm.
The 'unmentionable' is compression, but the only poster referring to to this that I could find had problems with hot starts as well. jor
