I could probably stretch to 300miles towing a 1900kg caravan with our XC90 B5 leaving another 100miles solo and not having to worry about using climate control, heated seats etc.

We are circa van 1900kg fully laden, bikes on the car make a huge difference even solo!

I don’t hang around with the van on the back either, rather this then have charging anxiety though!

Recent trip on M42 & M5 towng at a steady 60mph we passed a few EV's who were taking it very steady, my first thought "range anxiety"

Imagine the relaxation of knowing you are heading out on holiday in the van, oh wait a moment, you have to pre plan possible charging stops. Then the range anxiety, then what if i get to the charging station and there is no room, oh then if there is i have to unhook the van and leave it elsewhere in the service station car park, lock it up etc

Then off you pop fully charged to endure some more range anxiety. That sounds like a great way to start and finish a holiday!

When we had our boat - a small 18'6" cruiser, so not unlike a caravan - we bought a small genny to charge the batteries - leisure, not motive - and provide a modest source of mains power (600W) - when moored. While cruising, the batteries were charged via an engine driven alternator.

When we sold our boat we retained the genny and it has since proved useful on more than one ocassion when we have had a power cut.

Would such a solution work with an EV, do you think, or would the size of genny required make it impractical?

Regards, John.
A large generator…. A level 2 charge which would be the same rate as a home charger would be 50amps at 240v. That means you’d need around a 16kva generator - at that rating your well past anything portable.

….or you could overcome the inefficiencies in the generator, charger and battery by just connecting the output of the Diesel engine to the cars wheels?

Thank you for the explanation, 'Tannaton'. Please excuse my naivety; clearly a so-called 'suitcase' generator, such as the one that we had on our boat, which I envisaged, would be totally unsuitable for the purpose.

Ah, well ... back to the drawing board!

Regards, John.

So EV's relay on fossil fuels to rescue them, what will they do when there are no longer any fossil fuels.
There roadsides will be littered with EVs surrounded by solar panels slowly charging them enough for them to reach the next over priced non working/non compatible charging point.

Something we don’t need to worry about for a long time! 🥳
