Tailgate wiper spindle
My 850 tailgate wiper stopped working and I found it was because the spindle the wiper is attached to has seized. Anyone had this and fixed it without looking for a replacement?
Bob

Yes. There should be a circlip where it emerges from the housing. Remove that and any washers, noting where they came from, and you should be able to work the spindle out of the housing. Once it's out you clean all the corrosion off with sandpaper or Scotchbrite, grease it and reassemble. The hardest part is getting it back on the motor in the right place.
I haven't actually done an 850 rear wiper, I've done a 940 one and 850 front ones but the principle is the same.

Seized Wiper Spindle
Not done one on a Volvo but it looks similar to the mechanism on the front of a VW Golf Mk4.
Mine had seized (on the driver's side) so I removed it and soaked in various light oils and WD40 and then removed the circlip and gently persuaded it to move backwards out of the bush with a "Birmingham screwdriver" with a combination of gentle taps backwards and forwards combined with using Stilsons to twist back and forth. It took a while but I didn't want to break the cast bracket so took a couple of days of soaking and gentle movement in small increments. I did break the circlip but had to reuse what was left of it and so far it has lasted a couple of years.

Apologies for hijacking the thread a little but I've just replaced the mechanism as mine was seized into a nasty white and rusty lump had I of known how to fix I'd have had a go. Next time. However I'm missing the black plastic part/sleeve that goes over the spindle to stop water ingress, I can't even find the part number and I'm not sure what to ask for at volvo, does anyone know the part number? proper name? where I can get one?

Volvo Part number 9483187. It has to be fitted from the inside.

I also had this problem and fixed it as above. I recommend using white grease, because this is waterproof, as used on speedboat propeller shafts etc. - available from any good motor factor, or online of course. This will help it last a lot longer.

Rear wiper fixed, not too difficult. There was no corrosion on the spindle, it was just dry. So lots of Copperslip on the shaft.
