As Michael Caine would say - "Not a lot of people know that!"

You're quite correct, you can use the horn after dark in an emergency and given that the horn is earth switched, it further points to that bad connection you found, especially if it now sounds like Nelly the Elephant rather than Kermit the Frog!

Just a warning, this doesn't apply to the starter cable which is unfused. Also doesn't apply to the medium cable between the battery and the fuse box.

The cables should be held well against any rubbing, but if work has been done and the cables not put back correctly it could create a hazard. The cable rubbing on the body has been reported before, I'm not sure its older design issue or what exactly.

In any case this problem is associated with the lights, it seem more likely its a high resistance joint. A voltage measurement would have diagnosed the problem aswell as confirming the fix using a £5 meter from Maplin (or ebay now lol).

Many years ago, a friend of mine had an ex police riot bus, and a similar thing happened when the positive cable shorted on the chassis. The battery was under the floor a few feet back from the engine, and by the time he noticed due to a non start, the battery had melted so much that the terminals on top had started sinking into it. The bus was full of sulphur smoke as well.
