Default Power steering fluid change

Why are there so many videos and descriptions of changing the fluid in your PAS that advocate using turkey basters and the like to empty the reservoir?
I changed mine today and found that the reservoir can be unclipped and turned upside down over a jug to empty it! Instead of using 3-5l of fluid, I managed it with 2 one litre and still have just over half a litre left.
Why all the faff?

I'm taking it that mine wasn't one of the videos you saw.

Exactly the method that I used.

Quick and very simple.

No, it's not quite a waste of time, it's the same as doing sump dumps on an auto box.

Unclip the P/S reservoir from the expansion tank and empty the contents into a plastic container. Reattach and then refill with fresh fluid.

Drive the car so that all fluid mixes and repeat process.

2 Litres of CHF using this method had my fluid nice and clean and literally only took a few minutes to do each time. Probably 15-20 mins in total to complete the whole process and end up with clean fluid.

I suppose it doesn't matter which way that you do it so long as the fluid gets changed.

From memory if you disconnect the return pipe and block the hole you just empty the resovior and fill with clean oil, then turn the wheel lock to lock (either on jacks or as I did on two plastic bags) and the dirty oil in the rack will also pump out as you top up the resovior.
Only have to do it once and its easy.
Not sure if the oil in the pas pump is flushed but most of the rest seems to be.

Why all the faff?

Unsolved mysteries

Same reason why people crawl under the car to drain the transmission instead of just flushing it at the return line.

Probably because some people ( me included ) think that doing it that way is not the best way and have a choice. Each to their own.
