Update:
Got through my MOT fine the other day. While giving the usual checkover and realising the front tyres were on the limit (are they every not?!) I found the O/S tone ring to be snapped. I'm sure this is the problem now. I have seen it advised to replace both sides. They both look rather rusty. Is this a driveway job? I can't see I can undertake the replacement without cracking off the hub nut... - Richard |

Yes, I'm well aware, hence me posting to confirm your suspicions.
Any light on my last question? I believe it was in post #11. - Richard |

Re. your question - yes, you will need to take the hub nut off, but no reason you couldn't do the whole job on the driveway, to be honest it's difficult for us to say, because it depends mostly on your experience and ability and also you need a decent set of the right tools/equipment, for example the right socket for the hub nut and a long breaker bar, not to mention a steel wheel or a space-saver so you can get the socket through the centre hole to undo the nut with the car on the ground. Not sure if that helps a lot? I know I'd be doing it myself, but that's me.... Cheers!

Thank you. I'd say I can hold my own when it comes to ability.
I've recently shoved in a 7 seat conversion, which handily came with a steel space saver. I'll have to check, but I assume this will have enough space in the centre to get a hub nut socket through? I have a breaker bar and large sockets, and a lot of personally supplied mass, so will have to give it a go. It is ok to re-use the nut once removed? I assume it needs to be done up FT? Finally, how is the ring located and held? is it just a splined ring? Sincerely, - Richard |

Sounds like you have the ability and tools - love the bit about "personally supplied mass" - same here!! Lol. Yes, I believe it's OK to use the same nut, and yes, FT is right, I'm sure there's an official torque figure somewhere, but FT works for me, I doubt my torque wrench goes that high anyway, I've enough strength to exceed its limits as it is! Check whether the hub nut is left or right-hand threaded - this can save an awful lot of swearing. Don't know offhand how the ring is held on, others on here will know and answer that hopefully. Do post back with how you get on - cheers!

Just e-mailed Rufe for a quotation. So will let you know the part number and cost thealchemyst.
I've seen some 'specially treated' ones on the 'Bay for £15 each, so if FRF's quotation comes in a lot higher I'll probably just get those. I'll get some pictures up as and when. Will be a job for after my finals in May. Shall do it before I prepare the car for Le Mans, which also involves full BTCC livery, I'm sure some people would also like to see pictures of that. - Richard |
