later NCAP cars are stiffer and heavier than older ones.

You'll always come off worse in an older one!

Volvos are almost always better than their contemparies in real world crashes, the tests are quite artificial

Much as we all love our Volvos, let's not forget that they've played the "safety" card a little too emphatically over the years. Back in the 60s things like inertia reel seat belts and collapsible steering columns were a big deal, and Volvo soon found their niche selling heavy, tank-like cars like the 200 & 700 series.

Bear in mind all cars manufactured around the same time were subject to the same safety regulations, it was only Volvo who, to be uncharitable, had nothing else up their sleeve to offer went down the safety route. A Jag, Merc, Saab or any other car of a similar size and weight to a Volvo would probably fare just as well in a crash test.

Modern cars are exceptionally well engineered to survive major impacts, I have no doubt that in most cases a new Corsa, Clio, Polo etc would be the place to be if it was going to crash into a 15 year old Volvo.
Big old cars do well against small old cars, and sometimes even come off better in the low speed town shunts that do so much damage (and are one of the causes of high insurance premiums) to modern cars, but let's not kid oursleves on that in a head on shunt with each vehicle doing 30mph a Volvo 240 would be a better place to be than an 11 plate Clio.
