Default S40 1.8 96 - Just died on petrol forecourt

Hi everyone,

Its been as reliable as you'd want a car to be, until i was on my way home from work today. Stopped to put some fuel in and when i came to start it NOTHING! Won't turn over, dashboard lights up as normal but won't turn over. Its always started first time and tried jump leads but doesn't seem to be battery as lights are bright. Tried rocking backwards and forwards in 1st and reverse to see if it could be starter motor but n othing again, Please please help me.......

Check all earth straps. There will be one from battery to body but also check the engine to body one as well. Give them a good tug because sometimes it is difficult to see any breaks/corrosion. A dodgy connection will give you lights but not be powerful enough to operate the starter.

I've just been out and looked now, when the ignition is on, there is a ticking noise from the engine. I've found whats makin the ticking noise but i don't know what its called. I found it in the fuse box in the engine and its a black square cube. I've taken it out and its got 4 pins on, does anyone know what it is?

mm ages ago mine did this, the battery tested fine...try this attach one side of a jump lead ( use a THICK LEAD not one of these £2.50 leads you get from ASDA these wont start a wrist watch!) the other side attach to a good point on the engine/gearbox ( a lifting eye is ideal ) make sure it makes a good contact. If the engine starts you have an earthing fault, mine turned out to be a corroded battery lead earth point located under the battery.

I take it that renaulthater wanted to say the earth on the battery (-ve).
The lifting eye is a chunk of metal with a hole - used to lift the engine out of the car. It will be noticeable...

Luck....
