Default small alternators

Regarding your denso alternator did you have the later engine with the front mounting hole and if you did were you able to bolt the alternator lower bracket to this?
Cheers

The engine is a B20 and I used the front casting which, I believe, the dynamo would fit to (?). I attach a photo that might give a slightly better view. As with all these things you have to spend several hours with some steel stock, a hacksaw and an arc welder (and usually some Anglo Saxon phrases) to make appropriate brackets.

Thanks Mike
I am erring to this type of alternator, its small, light yet sufficient output for my needs.
Looking at the picture I have attached can you tell me which bolt positions you used A or B?
The reason I ask is if it is 'A' I presume alignment issues (pulley wheels) wasnt a problem or do you have to put spacers/remove material from the mounting side of the alternator 'ears'? Obviously installing it on position B would be relatively straightforward to obtain the alignment as you would build it into the bracket. However you do have to make the bracket with this position!!
Thanks in advance
Russ

One further question. Looking at your last picture you show the mounting arrangement on the head. Is this unique to the B20 as I dont have this on my B18?

We do seem to have some differences (apart from the obvious one that your engine is a lot tidier than mine). Firstly, the bottom mounting looks like your B in the picture. On mine is it hole right the way through and, if I remember correctly, it is not threaded. I cannot check this quickly as the car is kept in a lockup some way from my house. The bottom bracket on the alternator is in front of the B flange and held in place with a long bolt (8mm or 10mm) and packed out with washers to move the alternator forwards so that the pulleys align. Secondly, for the top mounting you have a pipe coming out of the side of the head where mine is blanked off. My DIY bracket goes over this so would not work on your engine. As you can see I used the front threaded hole on the top of the engine (where the dynamo adjuster arm would have fitted) and one of the manifold studs (a bit naughty). This gave me a secure bracket to take the strain of the new adjuster arm which is much further back than the dynamo would have been.

Hope that this helps.
