M59 problems
Hi guys, the M59 gearbox on my R has started to make a very odd noise, so went had a chap whom i trust take a look at it. It looks like (sounds like) the crown gear and possible the little that turns the crown(forgoten it name) are damaged.
now my questions are these. Can i replace the damaged gears with parts from a good M56 box? Or do i just look for a replacement M59, or put an M56 box in and not have the LSD? Your thoughts would be gratfuly received. Dean |

I don't know if you can fit the m56 gears into a m59 box or not but having taken a couple of m56 boxes apart and reassembled into 1 box I will say that
A the selector mechanism is fragile and can break whilst undoing the bolts holding it in. B as far as I'm aware you cannot get ANY parts for volvo gearboxes so if you break something the box is scrap! C the outer cups of the bearings that hold the first motion and layshaft are taper bearings with there cups fitted into blind holes making it almost impossible to remove without damage D given the above it is impossible to set bearing end float on those shafts however the diff uses a bearing that is at least on the m56 available as it is a standard industrial bearing. So you might be lucky and find that you can just drop the gears into the m59 box and everything fits perfectly but you will probably just end up with 2 knackered boxes. Personally I'd just look for a good replacement m59 or swap in a m56
