How about dragging brakes?

Incidentally, my 850 gives an indicated 23 on short runs & about 28 on long runs, but needs a thermostat & prob PCV.

My guess is that you've just replaced a knackered air mass sensor with another equally knackered sensor, unless you personally know for a fact it was a (correctly) working unit then you've no idea if its actually working properly and as this 1 piece affects your engine running under all conditions I would look to this as the cause. Just my 2p worth

I'd third the injectors.

I had mine terra cleaned locally as it cleans not just the injectors. Saw a vast improvement in fuel consumption. I was getting 33ish on the motoroway got it up to 35/36 at 80mph, even topped 40mpg at 60mph.

A improvement in throttle response as well. It felt alot more immident. If i recall cost me £60 took about 2 hours.

I am also going to send them away for cleaning as well in a month or so to get rid of any residual that the terra clean missed.

There has been a lot on ideas about the engine but only a coulpe about Brakes and Tyres. I would also look at stiff bearings, tracking ie all the running gear.

If no other faults are saved I would do the following:
- air filter
- thermostat // coolant temperature sensor
- fuel filter
- distributor cap & rotor
- ignition wires ok?
- ignition coil ok?
- clean the throttle assembly
- check/replace PCV system
- is the exhaust free ?
- check the vacuum hoses in the engine bay
- check for air leakage in the air hoses.
