BLUE - 2017 Volvo V40 T2 R-Design Progress Thread

Got in from work tonight and couldn't help myself.

Started cooking tea and decided to stick the moose badge on



And it was going right next to the R-Design badge



Made sure it was aligned spot on this time





And so endeth the debadging and rebadging of the boot

I had a bit of spare time this afternoon, so decided to install the mad flaps, just on the front of the car.

First up, jacked the drivers side up and off came the wheel.



Just a quick couple of pictures of the discs and calipers



Yes, I know, the discs need replacing. I'll do them when the pads are worn out.



And they'll be 300mm discs as stated/stamped on the carrier, but I knew they were anyway from my V50 days.

The arch area in general wasn't too filthy



And I located the headlight levelling sensor/arm as well.



Attached to the wishbone/suspension arm and wheel arch. I'll have to keep an eye on this, make sure it's clean and kept in good condition.
I can imagine they aren't cheap to replace if they break....

It was time to install. Thought I'd use a hack the partner had found that we used to put up a shelf one time.



Bits of masking tape over the screws that hold the arch liner in place. Using a black Sharpie, I put dots over the screw heads.

Then transferred the tape to the mud flap



Keeping in mind that the bottom 2 screws are slightly offset and not in a straight line to one another.

Then drilled the 3 holes and screwed the mud flap straight on



Everything back together, wheel back on and wheel nuts torqued up.



Then moved onto the passenger side and copied the process.

Quick pick of this wheel arch and no headlight sensor. Just the one on the drivers side.



New wishbone/suspension arm though, which was a failure on the MOT. Glad I managed to see/check that.

Weak looking droplinks though.... Will get some Meyle HD ones ordered and installed in the near future I think.

Passenger side complete





Think they are both a little on the low side and will no doubt scrape over speed bumps and coming on and off the driveway.

Haven't been out in her yet, so will find out first thing in the morning when I go to the gym.

If they are, at least it won't take long to put right. I should be able to put the wheels on full lock and remove the screws, re-drill the holes an inch or 2 lower and re-install.

I only did the front ones due to the rear arches having a slight recess in them



It is hard to see in the picture, but the screws are back a little bit, so aren't flush with the bumper like the front.

Shouldn't be a problem, but will take a little bit more time to install so they sit right.

It turned out the mud flaps were far too low.

As soon as I pulled off the drive, they scraped across the floor/slope. They also caught the road when I was going round corners....

Not to worry though, put the wheels on full lock and managed to remove them with ease.

Drilled new holes an inch and a half further down and re-installed. Hopefully that should have done the trick. Will again find out this afternoon when I leave the drive on my way to work.

After the recent downpours and thunderstorms we've had, I noted that the wipers weren't the best and left lots of streaks when in use.

New ones were one of the very first purchases I made for Blue, so today, thought I would get them stuck on as it's supposed to rain this afternoon and most of the week.

Of course it had to be BOSCH wipers



Started on the back one first



Like the V50, Blue's rear wiper sweep doesn't cover the entirety of the back window. I know it never will, but as the filth on the window shows, it stops quite a bit before the other side.

So, I pulled the cover up and off



Took the arm off and removed the old blade. Old vs New



And then re-installed the arm a little further round, so it wasn't horizontal



So now it sweeps pretty much evenly on both sides.

I then moved onto the fronts.

Due to the bonnet covering them, they had to be turned on so they were vertical, then turned off. That way the arm can be bent out so you can remove the wipers.

I took the old wipers off and when they were compared to the new ones, the fitment was different......
Luckily they still fitted, which I was thankful for as the box does list the V40 II as a car they fit.

A little bit of plastic did snap off when fitting the drivers side one, but it's locked in place still, so god knows where it came from...

Moving the front mud flaps up 1.5inch did the trick. No more scraping or catching of any kind.

I was on a half day today, so this afternoon got to work on installing the rear mud flaps.

Not many pictures this time as it looked like it was going to rain, so just wanted to get cracked on.

Same method/process was used as the fronts. Masking tape over the arch liner screws, marked up, then transferred to the mud flap.

To save a bit of time and faffing on, I just drilled both the mud flaps at the same time as the holes are the same on both sides.

As the rear bumper is a little higher, I was hoping to be able to have the mud flaps quite low. Unfortunately that wasn't possible as the lower I put them, the more difficult it was to find a suitable fixing point.

Too low and they didn't cover the arch screws and I didn't fancy screwing them directly into the bumper itself.

Still I'm happy with them where they are and hopefully they'll do their job at reducing surface spray when driving in the rain.
Along with keeping the back end a little less dirty.

The only thing that I did note is the little gap that will no doubt allow crap to accumilate.

I also received another key ring from the same guy I got the other one off.



Again, really decent quality

And a little bigger than the other one.



Happy with it though and it is now attached to the 2nd key fob. I tend to change fobs every month to make sure they still work and the batteries don't go flat. Plus I'm not just using 1 of them all the time and wearing it out.

During the Amazon Prime event thing where they have savings on many items, I purchased a new hoover mainly for car cleaning.

a Draper Wet & Dry Vacuum Cleaner



Not bad for the measly sum of £30.

Got it all put together and started on the cars interior

Drivers side footwell was pretty dirty as I'm in and out of it a lot.



The waterfall was a little dusty



The centre console cup holder area had some dried on krud in it



Rear Passenger side wasn't too bad



Not had many passengers in the car to date.

I like how the seats fold down, the rear headrest just automatically collapses when you lift the release tab



Not sure what those latch bars are for though on the back of the seats?

Front passenger side, again, not overly dirty



Process;

Hoovered all over
Used a generic APC for the plastics along with a couple of brushes to remove some stubborn stains and I was left with this







A nice interior to clean, but being all black every little spec of dust and crap is visible, so hoovering and cleaning I feel, takes a little longer than usual.

Once I was finished, I gave the interior mats, carpets and the cloth parts of the seats a little spritz of this



It's the same fragrance as the vent things that I use. Really nice.

Found some hidden filth whilst I cleaned, mainly in the rear cupholder and between the rear bench and back bench when you fold them forward.
Got all the stuff out from in between the seats, but didn't attach the cup holders. Will do those next chance I get as it looked like dried chocolate in there.

There was also a few marks on the rear carpets under the mats, tell tale signs of children being in the back. Those came out fairly easily though, so not an issue.

Got a couple more bits in the post the other day.

Some R-Design cup holder coasters and Instagram decals



The coasters are pretty decent. Just made of rubber





Haven't put the decals on yet as I can't wash the car with all the rain that's coming down at the moment...... every single day.....

So, I stuck the coasters in.

Cleaned the cup holder first with some APC, a brush and a microfibre cloth

And in they go



Pretty decent fit as well. Maybe a mm or so too big if I'm being picky, but at least they fit and aren't folding up as they're too big.

The Instagram decals will go on when I next wash the car.

The claim on my V50 crash is almost complete. I have a number from the assessor, just now waiting for the 3rd party to accept that, then I'll have a bit cash.
The majority of the money will go towards paying the V40 off and I think I'm going to keep a little bit of it to get the V40 re-mapped.

i was thinking of remapping but dont know how much pressure it will put
certain parts = engine, gearbox, clutch ect ect.
Will have to do some reserch first.
my car is a 67 plate t3 design pro,and i dont get that mpg

They only seem to be sold in pairs and there are unbranded versions on Amazon, but I'd say they're definitely worth their price tag.

I don't fancy everything tuned to the hilt and have all those parts replaced in a short time as they're worn out as they can't handle the extra power.
