2008 s40 2.0 diesel fuel pump

Hi all. I’m wondering can I ask for some sage advice. I’ve just bought the above car with a known fault with the fuel pump in the tank. My question is, with the Volvo sharing much of its parts with some fords, can I just get a fuel pump from a Ford that has the same model number on the pump?

When I dropped the tank, I saw the following number 3m51-9275

I have sourced a few Ford bits for my V50, same part number same item on the bits I have had. It opens up the search area for parts. A lot of the Volvo parts are FoMoCo parts in a Volvo box with a Volvo sticker, and a mark up !! My Charge air pipe from Volvo

There isn't an electric fuel pump in the tank on a 2.0 D... Its the main mechanical injection pump which draws the fuel up.... ...

So when I turn the ignition on (but not start the car) I’m not hearing any hum from the sender (whereas I do on other cars). Is that normal then?

Hi,

Yes, completely normal. As Clan says, you don't have a in tank pump. What is in the tank looks like a pump and some websites call it a pump. Effectively, it's a mini fuel tank that holds fuel correctly in order for the engine pump to suck it out in a fuel circuit system. This unit also comproses the fuel quantity sender. The 1.6D is the same.

What fault symptoms are you having?

Just cranking and not starting at the minute. The guy who I bought it off said it needed a new fuel sender but now that I’ve asked here, I’m not convinced. I’ll try plugging it into the computer once the rain clears and see if it gives me any hints or clues 😊

Does the fuel that's actually in the car corelate to what's shown on the guage?

Yes. That side of things seems to correlate properly.
