Surging engine
Driving along, my diesel 'surges'. Feels like it's running out of fuel. I have changed the fuel filter and I thought the fault had gone. The turbo is whistling but still boosts, am I looking for an air leak?

Any pattern to it? Mine would briefly lose revs when accelerating at about 2,800-3,000 rpm and it was a faulty MAF sensor

Hmm, doesn't seem to matter if engine is cold or warm, seems to happen most in the 1500 to mid 2000 rev range. I unplugged the EGR when I first got the car as it was losing power around 1800 rpm but that was 3 years ago. Doesn't seem to happen 'quickly' enough to be an electrical problem. I'm thinking fuel delivery or air leak.

Possible fuel starvation (blocked fuel tank pick-up) or beginnings of a small boost leak (hose under the turbo is the usual suspect).

Quick update, car has behaved fine since posting this fault. Very odd (but a nice relief)!
Different subject - how easy is it to swap a turbo unit on this model on a driveway, any special tools? |
