Evening...

I'm thinking of upgrading from my standard 17" rims to 19 or 20".

Can anyone share any experiences with what may/or will occur when upsizing e.g. Handelling, fuel economy etc.

Indeed. I'd suggest you don't go any larger than 18" if you wish to retain a smooth ride over our less than smooth road system.

It'll be much worse to drive, with a worse ride... worse economy...

Just worse.

It'll look great tho.

I had a test drive last week in a 2011 R Design 200 bhp with 19" wheels on. I had a thorough test over all road conditions and found it a good ride. My present car is the XC60 AWD D5 Auto. I am collecting a new XC90 R Design on 4th January this package comes with the 20" Cratus alloys. I hope that the extra inch on the wheels does not make the ride too much different from the 19"s

I went from an SE with standard 18 inch rims to an R Design with 19 inch rims and the ride is vastly superior - especially cornering and on rural roads. The R Design has lowered stiffened suspension and this enables the XC90 to have a more predictable car like ride whilst remaining very pliant and cosseting on bumpy roads and undulations. Don't know what the 20"s are like but I much prefer the ride and handling of the R Design - mention of fillings dropping out, harshness and tram lining is utter nonsense in my opinion!

same here. i've got a 2006 executive model. i also went from 18" to 19" as the local dealer did a great deal of a set of brand new V8 19" rims and tyres for £1000. although very very slightly firmer ride (i do tyres at 39 psi) its not as bad as some people say. cornering feels slightly improved with the lower profiles as slightly less roll around roundabout.

i went from 235 to 255. noticed a slight reduction in mpg, but that was changing from continental to pirelli's at the same time. i'd love to fill the arches a bit more, but can't justify the cost of just adding 1 more inch.

only drawback to me. increased tyre cost. can't fit snow chains. thats all i can think of.

Hi, I've got a MY2011 XC90 D5 with the Volvo 20" wheels. The ride is fantastic, esp on the motorways. Absolute nonsence that your fillings drop out - it's smooth and cornering is predictable and stable. Extra cost of tyres is pennies if you shop around. Oh, and you can get snow chains to fit. Thule do a fantastic range especially for 4x4's.

And it makes the XC90 look great, especially if your PX'ing a 'sportier' car and prefer a more spirited drive......

I've use 18" on my winter rims and 19" on my summer rims. Right, the 19" gives a bit harder drive. But nothing that is concerning in comfort. I have shortly tried the 20" rims with 275/45 tires. The ride was okay, but the engine seemed to lose power. So no 20" for my car, since it is only a D5 with 163 HP.
Offcourse, the fuel consumption has to be bigger on my 19" with 255/55 than on the 18" 235/60. Choose fuel friendly tires, to make the gab smaller.
Then again, who's counting? If I was concerned, I would buy another car. ;-)

I have a 2007 XC90 Sport with 19" wheels as standard. It is smooth to drive,not harsh at all, the only downside apart from the price of them is the already poor turning circle is even worse. Three point turns are a thing of the past, now it's five or seven.
I have just fitted a full set of General Grabber UHP tyres and they are great.
