Well just back from my dealer who agreed that the uneven wear was excessive.

They have thoroughly checked everything & performed a brake test. All appears to be OK but they suspected that either one caliper was not working as hard as the other or one set of pads were a bit soft.

So after checking the calipers again and cleaning everything up the new pads have been fitted.

I will keep an eye on them over the next few thousand miles but now confident that it was a one off mystery.

Cheers.

Mike

Stil on my original pads at 54,000. At last service 3 weeks ago rears were reported at 65% worn and fronts 35% worn.

Seems like your dealer is drumming up work unless you are very hard on your brakes.

My dealer is most definitely not drumming up work as they are totally trustworthy and I have seen the pads myself.

I am also not hard on brakes so it remains a bit of a mystery other than the pad material on one side could have been suspect.

In the end my dealer was very generous in sorting it out.

I will be checking them regularly for any irregular wear pattern.

Default rear brakes on 2014 xc60 4wd

Just sitting in volvo dealer now waiting for rear discs & pads to be replaced.
Have done around 49000 miles and at service 3 weeks ago told that rear discs / pads were 60% / 80% worn, whilst front discs / pads were 10% / 10% worn.

The technical engineer said this is the case with the 4wd cars - although don't remember having this issue on the last 2010 version of same car ?

Hey Ho.

Hi My previous XC60 did 72K before it had the pads changed. Disks were fine the garage said. This was a main Volvo dealer. I was happy.

Thanks for all your experiences. It's clear that mine were premature to say the least. If this new set wears the same my dealer will be hearing from me.

I am normally very light on brakes and tyres so 23,000 doesn't make sense.

Cheers,

Mike

Just a thought - is this your first automatic gearbox?

I ask because people are often harder in the brakes in their first auto until they get used to the gearbox. Miight that explain your premature wear?

Question XC60 rear brake replace

Hi folks
This is my first post since trading my RAV4 against an XC60.
Seems like a great forum !
My rear pads are at 3mm after 28k miles (front at 5mm). Dealer at recent service suggest rear discs need replacing too. Am planning to do the work myself. Can anyone suggest what size torx bits I will need? I guess they will be large ones so not currently in my toolbox.
Also, any comments welcome re best way to compress EPB piston etc. Will a G Cramp do it?
Thanks in advance...
