P3 water trap in wing not draining
2013 P3 where the bonnet hinges and gas strut open there is a slot between the inner and outer wing about two inches down in this slot there is a soft foam pad. This area does gather debris over time leaves etc. Today on fillings washer bottle I found the off side slot is full of water yet the near side is dry, last night we had rain but water ought not to be gathering there, is there a drain hole which is blocked? If so where is it?
The local dealer says bring it in and we can look at it, but then they would book it in for 2019. If there is a drain hole once found can be unblocked. Am I the only one? |

There is a drain in the recess on the right hand side of the engine compartment which must be blocked. It is a common fault and probably the sponge is full of dirt and dead leaves which needs cleaning. The drain exits water underneath, just in front of the drivers door so it should be easily cleaned.

cured this on mine by pushing a plastic tube (used a till roll center) down between the sponge and the inner wing, just needs a poke with a bit of wire every now and then. although you still need to remove large leaves from the void.

It's the use of sponge rubber that worries me. It can end up a permanent wet bath against the wing. Very sloppy design work and not very "Volvo".

Thanks for support
Agree about foam inserts, even if not holding water where they contact the bodywork will remain wet for ages, not what we might expect. My first Volvo 245gl from 1982 was hit on the near side doors at force sufficient to bend the propshaft tunnel and crease the roof, written off but 5 people got out with a few bruises.
By the looks on the video mentioned there seems to be a lot of air holding the car together, is it actually a crumple zone area or is it just cheaper. Fitting improved drain sounds good will follow that up when it stops raining. I appreciate members replies most helpful. Is the first rule of working at a service desk it to learn to say I have never heard of that before for common faults? |

I don't think crash survival is a problem. See:
