Looks like the pictures have disappeared into cyberspace. If you're handy with spanners then is't really quite a simple task and self explanatory as you start removing the parts that are in the way of the mount. About a 20 minute job and that's it

I recently bought a 2004 xc90 and the vibration started not long after, changed both vacuum mounts but still have an issue. A one point is was really bad then I went to have a look at the top mount loosened it off and most of the vibration went away but I did notice that the top mount has a bit of play in it, is this normal? Don't want to order another for it just to be the same.

Cheers

There is a slight amount of play in the top mount, but if excessive it will require changing. To check remove the entire top spreader bar and check the mount for excessive movement

Yes the top mount is always a bit sloppy.

There are two other engine mounts to check too.

How much movement is sloppy? I definitely feel its too much as I think I can feel the movement while driving.
The bottom gearbox stabiliser looks new and is the poly bush type, not been able to see the engine mount on the pully side yet.

That might be your issue. Poly bushes are known to transmit more vibration than rubber. They even state that on the packaging.

I've now changed all my engine mounts and it is so much better, still a bit of vibration when stood still and in reverse but this is probably just 5 cylinder diesel rattle now, top mount definitely had an issue. Now onto the next things to fix.

Default doing it on the cheap

I can confirm that the pattern bushes like Febest VLMB-S60RR will fit the square diesel mounts (as well as the square petrol mounts, for which they are specified).

This is 10-30 Euros vs 100+ for the housing.

This is the bush only (not the housing). You need to drill out the ends of the aluminum rivets from the end plate (7-8mm drill), then put the original plate on after pushing the bush into the housing. It is a tight fit so much easier if you pull the housing. I have pictures if needed but it's fairly straight forward.

OK, here's what it looks like prior to drilling out the rivets

Comparison of the blocks - the new one has bigger wings, but otherwise the same

Comparison of the front - both with rivets drilled

Ready for fitting
