Default Temprature Sender Faulty

My 1998 V70 had a running problem a couple of years ago which I could not figure out (checked all the usual such as plugs, leads, distributor etc.) so took it to a Volvo indy who diagnosed and replaced the temp sensor even though the gauge worked perfectly. This resolved the issue and was a comparatively cheap fix.

I've looked into replacing the coolant temp. sensor and it looks pretty straightforward. But does anyone know if it can be done without having to drain coolant? That is the bit I might struggle with.

My temp. gauge reads ok, but I note it can still be a cause of a problem regardless.

I've plugged my code reader in which says no codes are logged, but its a cheap reader and I'm not sure I trust it to be right. I don't have an engine management light lit on the dash, but then I'm not sure if my car has one!

I also experienced the same problem. Getting petrol was a nightmare. Initially i had the engine temperature sensor replaced initially by a indy garage and it didn't fully resolve the issue. My Volvo Specialist sourced an original Volvo item from a main dealer and fitted it - I have never had a problem since.

You don't need to completely drain the coolant, just enough so you can remove top hose and thermostat housing, you could just loosen top hose and let it drain. While you're at it might as well replace the thermostat.
