Default Fire extinguishers

Transferring the various car junk items over into the new T8, I noticed my dry powder extinguisher is about of date.

Are there any mounting bracket options for the new XC90? (I can only find details for the old model)

Otherwise it’s just back to the door pocket, but these are a bit small in the XC compared to what I’m used to.

I’ve seen the compact aerosol types, but these seem to not have all the safety approvals of the traditional larger ones. Anyone found any good solutions?

Also - any hybrid owners carry Lith-EX type extinguishers? I suppose it’s more psychological than anything, if that big 10kw bad boy goes up, all being well I won’t be stopping nearby to try and put it out...

I assume in your investigation of "aerosol types" you have looked at the products from Firetool. I have one in my caravan and one in the car. They are endorsed by a number of organisations involved in the automotive and leisure industries. There are are some videos of them in use on YouTube.

I didnt get dry powder as the clean up is apparently nearly as bad as the fire. The powder would apparently get everywhere and probably write the car off as every electronic module would potentially be contaminated.

So I have non conductive foam in mine and neatly installed in the recess on the LHS of the boot.

Yes - the FireTool ones were what I was looking at. I’ve just bought one in fact, the OEM bracket looks OK but I guess these small units will fit in the door pocket.

Hadn’t thought of the mess aspect, though I guess even a small car fire equals a write off anyway...

According to the Firetool website the damage to electronic equipment should be minimal an the clean-up reasonably easy though no doubt time consuming.

"IS IT SAFE FOR SENSITIVE EQUIPMENT?

Firetool aerosol has been tested on a wide range of materials including structural, aviation composites, and materials commonly used in electronics, and circuit boards. In all cases it has been shown that the Firetool has no deleterious effect on the operating capability of equipment. Due to the ultra-fine particle size and the method of generation, the particulate is quite buoyant and suspends in the gas/air mixture within the protected enclosure. Because of this "buoyant" effect the aerosol does not begin to "settle" for an extended period and, therefore, is extremely easy to vent from the protected area. Only very minor amounts of particulate may be deposited on equipment and, generally, there is no need to do anything beyond extraction of the air within the protected volume through a fan or air handling system — followed by a blow down with compressed air. Any particulate deposited on horizontal surfaces will be ≤ 2΅m and will not form a continuous layer. Large gaps will exist between particles — leaving no potential for electrical conductivity issues to develop. As a precautionary measure, however, it is always good practice to inspect and clean the site thoroughly following a discharge. While the aerosol itself is quite "clean", environmental factors are also a consideration. The unknown, and potentially harmful, by-products of an actual fire pose the biggest risk to sensitive electronic equipment. Because unknown products from the fire itself may be present, it is always recommended that equipment be blown down with air or vacuumed following a discharge to insure that no unwanted by-products from the fire itself are present.
".

I hope I never have to try it though.

Bit of a thread resurrection but does anyone know what the current part number is for the fire extinguisher holder? The previous part is no longer available.

Or are there other options for the new XC90?

Thanks,

S

I am pleased with my solution. A 1 litre non conducting foam extinguisher fits neatly in the recess on the left hand side of the boot. Easy to fit too, just take out the recess trim, bolt the bracket through it and refit.

Any pics?

I have some kind of strange need to have the extinguisher in the cabin, I like having mounted under the seat should the worst happen.
