Default F-word..

Almost 25K kms scuff-free - and I did this today, pulling into my underground garage

Damn diamond finish I was thinking of sanding it down to make it less visible + hit it with some clearcoat.. anyone has a better recipe to fix this/cover it up?..

Ouch, youre correct, some careful sanding then hitting it with some clear lacquer is all you can do to improve it.

Proper job means getting it refaced as you probably know.

I’m glad that as of this year Ive no longer got diamond cut wheels, the stress is too much!

Plenty of businesses will sort it out for between £100 and £150. The most sure way of avoiding the same fate in future is to order two 8 cube loads of readymix to fill the hole.

Painfull!
Do you think it would have been less worse or easier to repair if it was a "classic" design?
I am not a fan of the diamond cut design (also) since I fear that they will look bad after some
years, but it didn't occur to me that it would also be more difficult to repair if damaged.

Thanks all. Yeah, resurfacing is the only way to go- the problem though is with diamond finish I have yet to see a resurfaced wheel to match the factory finish.. Specifically, volvo diamond finish wheels have this silky, almost matte finish- I suspect if I were to refinish one- I’d have to do all 4..

That answers gaby’s question- in my experience, diamond finish is much more difficult to repair, and they seem to be more sensitive/more prone to curbing/scuffing.. And unlike lacquered wheels- not DIY-friendly. I did numerous touchups on lacquered wheels - often times with excellent results- but these..I’ll try sanding/clearcoat (I’ll post pics..), just hoping to make it less visible.. at best..

Even if you do nothing else, I would give it a coat of lacquer to protect it from the winter.

Some 180, 300, and 600-grit sandpaper, rubbing compound, polish, and a pint of elbow grease later- here’s the result. It actually came out quite good- flash is making it hard to see but in person it’s barely noticeable.

Before:

After:

There’s not much to it other than masking the undamaged area (I used ducktape..) and sanding in the direction of fine lines (perpendicular to the spoke itself..)

Curb away!
