RTI navigator
One of the features that I would have liked but that was not present was the retractable navigator's screen in the center of the dashboard, both because my sense of orientation is equal to 0 , and because I really like having this motorized thing that comes out ... therefore, I studied all the English / American Volvo forums and all the various Youtube videos of those who had already made this modification and I came to the conclusion that trying to install all the original RTI system it would have been problematic, as well as expensive and also quite useless ... problematic because even if we admitted to recover all the various components (which incidentally are also found on Ebay ...) it would have been necessary to disembowel half the machine to assemble them since they are scattered at various points of the car, in addition to having to pass all the necessary wiring ... therefore expensive in terms of money and time ... and above all useless because reading around I understood that then the system will not be had been recognized by the car's control unit not being "born" together ... and even admitted to being able to communicate them with various reprogramming / software updates, I would have had an obsolete system ...
So I had two options: get me only an RTI screen and put in it a satellite navigator of the right size (as someone here on the forum has already done) or, even better upgrade, install in a new screen with the possibility of connecting interfaces for readers DVD / navigator / TV box and more ... the second possibility tickled me more, but aware of having very little knowledge of electronics, I opted for plan A. Found on Ebay an RTI screen of a V72 restyling (the screen is slightly bigger than the pre-restyling, 6.5 inches against, I think, 6 inches) at a good price, and a TOMTOM start 60 xxxL which from my research turned out to be ideal in terms of dimensions, I buy everything and as soon as I arrive I start working Unfortunately I have not taken many photos of the work, however if someone wanted to try their hand, the whole thing consists in completely emptying the original RTI on the screen and all the electronics present, until you have only the empty shell and the electric motor that makes the opening / closing the screen. Open the TOMTOM and transfer the screen and electronic cards to the RTI case; in size, the new screen is only slightly smaller, but just 1/2 millimeters, to overcome this, I cut the screen frame from the front plastic of the TOMTOM and adapted it inside the plastic of the RTI, in this way it remains aesthetically perfect and also serves to hold the screen in position. Then with double-sided tape and packaging material taken at work I created some shapes to hold the card and the battery in place and make a certain effect: - \ anti-vibration ... I fixed the small speaker on the metal panel of the sliding part of the RTI simply fixed with a plastic band (... just because I didn't find a better way to do it) This is the result: https://photos.app.goo.gl/hKVYjTnModf9k3PA7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/WTSUNG8QfN12JSF66 https://photos.app.goo.gl/rfxPoc6c195wr8tVA https://photos.app.goo.gl/7iF4CmDcdXCQ5Ex79 https://photos.app.goo.gl/sAqExV4V5TgmcttG9 https://photos.app.goo.gl/UmF6iDnGwKd3qKaR9 https://photos.app.goo.gl/DtLtaQqem9zMK75U6 As you can see in a couple of photos the TOMTOM has a 90 ° mini USB plug which is perfect for the space available, I just had to cut a slice from the metal panel in correspondence so that it remained in an optimal position ... It remained "only" to understand how to operate the screen, ie how to make it open / close ... in the original system it is operated by the small joystick on the steering wheel, which I do not have and which however would not have worked without all the original components .. I had seen that many had managed to do it through electronic circuits programmed with Arduino, which was beyond my ability even after studying a bit, so I opted for a simple three-position on-off-on button, connected in so as to reverse the rotation of the motor according to the pressure on the button, and thus obtain the opening and closing of the screen. https://photos.app.goo.gl/VH71cbQ4HeENjkrd8 Since I wanted to have it in a convenient position to operate but not visible, I positioned it inside the ashtray which has a closing flap, building a rise inside to have space to encase the switch and wires ... https://photos.app.goo.gl/CVmxPKa9VqXN9PY96 I then covered the white part with a leftover dark gray wrapping film. I have connected the switch and the navigator both under position I of the ignition lock, so with the ignition off I can operate the screen, and having the TOMTOM the particularity that as soon as it receives power turns on and vice versa, I don't need to use its on / off button, but when the screen is opened he is already on; once the car is turned off, the power is removed from the whole therefore no risk of absorption that will suck up the battery charge. The navigator works with a voltage of 5V so I interposed a 12V-5V transformer before going to connect to the cigarette lighter cables, which are the most comfortable in position. What can I say, I had a lot of fun during the construction, I learned several things that I didn't know about electronics / electricity that can always come in handy, and I have a technologically recent and easily upgradable navigation system but integrated in the dashboard as originally, so very satisfied ! |

https://photos.app.goo.gl/BH4g2aAP8BCZVqfJ9 Here a couple of photos of everything assembled and working, I'm still looking for an original grid to replace this, which is one of the pre-rest version (therefore with the slot for the smaller screen) that I modified by adapting a frame taken from a restyling grid but stupidly bought in the UK then with right-hand drive and grill with different shape ... https://photos.app.goo.gl/qENgtsuUpNUR1pvr5 https://photos.app.goo.gl/QXaeLmUAG7JNP15M9 https://photos.app.goo.gl/Vs63iNrp3L25wmyv5 https://photos.app.goo.gl/3cecHfk151ENR2Kq8 it did not come very badly, but it is not quite as perfect as I would like and my eye always falls there ... |
